Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Chris Duarte, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

EOU Men’s Soccer Falls in Double Overtime to Providence, 2-1

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Junior defender Ethan Ronquillo netted the equalizer in the 72nd minute but with just under four minutes remaining in the second overtime, the visiting Argos caught a break as a cross inside the box took a deflection for the game-winning goal Saturday afternoon at the EOU Soccer Field.

EOU (5-3-1, 2-2-1 CCC) was put in an early hole just two minutes into the first stanza as the Argos' (5-3, 4-2 CCC) Christoffer Bisbo recorded his 11th goal of the year. In the 16th minute, Kevin Vasquez-Hernandez nearly made it a 2-0 ball game but his shot from just inside the 18-yard box was swatted away with one hand by freshman keeper Alex Mitchell, who got the starting nod in net today.

The Blue and Gold's next quality chance came in the 39th minute off a Ronqullio header but the UP keeper was right on top of it for the denial. The score would stay the same heading into the intermission with EOU holding an 8-4 shot advantage.

Providence opened the second half with a flurry of shots starting inside the 52nd minute but Mitchell was there to keep it a tight game on the scoreboard. Down one and with just under 20 minutes remaining, EOU and Ronquillo capitalized on an Argo misfired pass back to their own keeper which led to a corner. Senior forward Julian Wells placed the corner kick inside the box and after a couple of deflections, Ronquillo's tap knotted the affair in the 72nd minute.

EOU kept applying the same pressure which got them the equalizer and in the closing minutes, Wells' corralled a loose ball inside five-yard box, fired a shot, only for it to ricochet off the near post as the game went into overtime.

In the first overtime, the EOU defense blanked the Argos in shots, while the offense recorded two. The match seemed destined to finished in a tie until UP's Adrian Gomez, off a long volley, maneuvered himself around Mitchell in the box and his cross bounced off an EOU defender in the 107th tick for the golden-goal victory.

The Mountaineers capped the game leading in shots, 18-12. Ronquillo and Wells fired three shots apiece. In net, Mitchell logged seven saves in only just his second start of the year.

Argos had four players who launched two or more shots.
