No. 16 Corban Ends No. 12 EOU’s Home Winning Streak with Sweep

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In a rematch of the 2016 Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament finals, No. 16-ranked Corban volleyball team got its revenge in a three-set sweep of No. 12 Eastern Oregon, Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum.

The loss for the Mountaineers ends a historic 50-match regular season conference-winning streak, dating back to 2012. The loss also ends EOU's 15-match home win streak overall and its current five-match winning streak.

In a riveting first set, the Warriors (11-6, 6-2 CCC) looked well on their way to an easy win, leading 18-11. Much like the conference tournament finals a year prior, the Mountaineers (12-5, 6-2 CCC) showed their ability to make a late comeback. EOU grabbed eight of the next 10 points to pull within one of Corban. The teams traded points before the Warriors were able to clinch the first set on a kill by Alaina Gentili to take it 25-22.

The Mountaineers got off to the quick start in set two, going ahead by six points 12-6 and later 16-10. The tables completely turned, however, when Corban went on a nine-point run to take a 19-16 advantage. The Warriors continued, grabbing six of nine points to defeat EOU 25-20 and put a stranglehold on the match with a two-set lead.

Corban kept its momentum into the third set, forcing an EOU timeout after pulling ahead quickly 7-2. The Mounties bounced back with eight of nine points to take a 10-8 advantage. Later with the teams tied at 14 apiece, Corban went on another long run of six points to take a comfortable 20-14 lead before ultimately defeating EOU 25-18 in the final set.

The Warriors hit .246 for the match with a 46-37 advantage in kills. Offensively, they were led by Adriana Aguayo who racked up 14 kills and a .345 hitting percentage. Amber Parker added 13 kills while Gentili had nine and a match-high six blocks.

Setters Cierra Leopoldino and Madison Milligan combined for 37 assists for the Warriors.  Haley Wells posted a match-high 16 digs.

On the Mountaineers' side, senior right side hitter Isabelle Statkus had 11 kills and an impressive .556 hitting percentage. Senior middle hitter Madisen Garlie also had a strong night offensively with 10 kills while hitting .600 from the floor.

Freshman setter Madison Pilon led all players with 23 assists, followed by fellow freshman Abby Smith with 12. Freshman libero Kiley McMurtrey had 15 digs. Senior middle hitter Emily Nay recorded one solo block and five block assists.

Eastern Oregon next visits Walla Walla on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. They then follow up with a big home match against No. 8 College of Idaho on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
