No. 13 Mounties Escape with 5-Set Victory over Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Trailing two sets to one at the Evergreen State College, the No. 13 Eastern Oregon volleyball team won the final two sets to come away with a 3-2 victory (20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11) on Friday night.

The Mountaineers (10-4, 4-1 CCC) won their third straight Cascade Collegiate Conference match over Evergreen (4-8, 1-4 CCC), but needed 72 kills to come away with the victory.

The offense had five players record double-digit kills, led by senior outside hitter Amanda Miller with 17. Senior middle hitter Emily Nay posted 13 kills and led the team with a .458 hitting percentage as she was very effective down the stretch. Fellow senior middle hitter Madisen Garlie had 14 kills and seven blocks, followed by senior right side hitter Isabelle Statkus and sophomore Hailee Ackerman with 10 kills apiece.

Freshman libero Kiley McMurtrey tied a career high with 27 digs, adding five assists. Freshman setter Madison Pilon finished with 27 assists, while junior setter Sarah Carpenter had 18. Freshman Abby Smith added 10 assists. Fellow freshman Aspen Christiansen posted a career-high 17 digs followed by senior Malia Mills with 14.

Despite the kills, EOU struggled to hit consistently for the first four sets, finishing the match with a .238 hitting percentage and 27 errors. In the fifth set, the Mountaineers cleaned up for a .345 hitting percentage and 13 kills to just three errors.

After falling behind 2-1 in the match, EOU trailed 14-13 in set four and looked in danger of an upset loss. The Mountaineers then grabbed the next four points and never looked back, defeating the Geoducks 25-21.

The Mountaineers continue on the road on Saturday, visiting a tough opponent in No. 25-ranked Northwest. First serve is set for 7 p.m. from Kirkland, Washington.
