No. 14 EOU Men’s Basketball Set to Battle Grenadiers

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The 14th-ranked EOU men's basketball team advanced to its first NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Championship tournament since 2013, after finishing the 2016-17 campaign a combined 23-8.
 
Now, the Mountaineers are to due battle with a new foe, No. 17 IU Southeast out of New Albany, Ind., and the River States Conference (RSC).
 
EOU AT A GLANCE
Already this postseason, EOU has notched its first Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) playoff win since 2015, as the Blue and Gold blew past Warner Pacific 84-58, in the CCC Quarterfinals.
 
In two games of the CCC tournament, the Mounties averaged 87 points while shooting 45.9 percent from field goal range. Leading the way for EOU with a combined 37 points and 19 rebounds was senior guard Kentrell Washington.
 
EOU recently carded two All-CCC players in the senior duo of forward Bryan McGriff and Washington, the pair are also the two most recent Mountaineers in the 1,000 point club.
 
In conference games the Blue and Gold tallied a 15-5 record, including winning seven of their last ten games. At home the Mounties were 14-2, but on the road the team struggled, finishing 6-6. On neutral court games, EOU has been undefeated, 3-0. The Mountaineers come in as the fourth-ranked team in NAIA Division II three-point field goals per game (11.2), and fifth in scoring offense per game, averaging 90.7 points. The Blue and Gold have chalked up 20 double doubles, 15 of which are McGriff's.
 
The leading scorer for EOU is McGriff, who is averaging 21 points while putting up a field goal percentage of 51.7 percent. McGriff is the squad's leading rebounder with 9.42 per game, while Washington leads the team with nearly four assists per game.
 
SCOUTING THE GRENADIERS
IU Southeast has already earned a championship this season, when they won the RSC regular-season championship. The team also made it to the RSC tournament championship, but they fell to in-state rival IU East, 78-69.
 
During IU Southeast's three games in the RSC tournament, the team averaged 84 points with a field goal percentage of 46.7 percent. Jamie Johnson led the Grenadiers in points in the tournament, as the freshman totaled 73 points three games.
 
IU Southeast finished the RSC regular season 16-2 and faced ranked opponents such as IU East and West Virginia Institute of Technology. The Grenadiers were tough both at home (14-2) and on the road (10-4), but have yet to face-off in a neutral site game. IU Southeast is currently ranked No. 8 in the NAIA for opponent three-point percentage at 31.3 percent. On the year, 12 double doubles have been put up for the Grenadiers with four-a-piece from Joe Jackson, Tyler Landry and Robert Sawyer.
 
Johnson is the leading scorer for IU Southeast, averaging 16.35 points per game, while Landry leads in the team in field goal percentage with 59.4 percent.  Jackson leads the squad in rebounds with 6.79 per game, while Demetrius Stanton averages more than four assists per game.
