Ashby’s Late 3 Holds off WWU, Gives EOU 80-77 Victory

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – After an incredible comeback in the second half by Walla Walla, the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team returned the favor in the final minutes, defeating the Wolves 80-77 on Saturday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers (12-3, 4-3 CCC) had a dominant first half, leading 45-24 heading into the locker room. In the second half, however, the Wolves (5-11, 1-4 CCC) went on a 33-12 run in the first eight minutes of the second half, tying the score at 57 apiece. Walla Walla continued their momentum late into the game, leading by as many as 10 points, 71-61, with 5:25 to play.

The Blue and Gold never gave up though, finally reclaiming the lead 76-75 with just 47 seconds left after a Garret Sawyer tip in. The Wolves hit two free throws to go back ahead by a point, but then senior guard Cole Ashby connected on a clutch three pointer with 25 seconds to play, giving EOU a 79-77 advantage. After a steal, sophomore guard Max McCullough made one free throw with six seconds left and the defense held the Wolves scoreless on the final shot.

EOU played great defense in the first 20 minutes, limiting the Wolves to 28 percent from the field and 1-of-11 from behind the arc. In the second half, the Walla Walla shooters got hot, shooting 50 percent overall and 9-for-15 from long range.

McCullough led the Blue and Gold with 23 points, hit eighth game this season with 20 or more in a game. Freshman guard Jordan May had 18 points, Sawyer finished with nine while Ashby added eight with six of his points in the final five minutes. Making his second start of his career, redshirt freshman forward Peter Hamilton had a career-high 12 rebounds with five on the offensive glass.

The Wolves got 22 points from Wesley Burke who scored 20 of them in the second half, making 5-of-9 three-point attempts. Dylan Browning added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Mountaineers will return to action in 2018 having won four of their last five games in the CCC. The Blue and Gold next head to Olympia, Washington on Jan. 5 against Evergreen.
