Mountaineers Use 18-Point Run to Defeat WWU 85-74

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Using an 18-point run in the first half, the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team took the only lead it would need, defeating Walla Walla 85-74 on the road in Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Friday afternoon.

Walla Walla (5-10, 1-3 CCC) took an early 16-9 lead through the first five minutes of the game until the Mountaineers (11-3, 3-3 CCC) rolled off 18 straight points over the next nine minutes of play. The run gave EOU a 27-16 advantage as the Mountaineers would never let the lead fall below nine points.

Sophomore guard Max McCullough had his seventh game of 20 or more points, leading the team with 27 on 9-of-21 shooting. The sophomore also added six assists and was one of four players with double-digit points. Senior guard Cole Ashby added 16 points and led the team with seven rebounds. Junior guard Said Hersi came off the bench to post 14 points with six boards and freshman guard Jordan May finished with 13 points.

After taking a 40-24 lead at halftime, the Mountaineers traded points effectively with the Wolves in the second half. Walla Walla cut their deficit down to as few as nine points with 2:13 to play, but the Mountaineers let the Wolves no closer.

For the Wolves, Michael Isotalo led the team with 16 points, followed by Wesley Burke with 14. Both teams shot very similarly, with EOU holding a slight 42.3-41.9 percent advantage shooting over Walla Walla.

The Mountaineers will remain in College Place, Washington against Walla Walla on Saturday, with game time scheduled for 8 p.m.
