Mountaineers Suffer First Loss 84-71 at No. 13 Southern Oregon

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team was defeated for the first time this season, falling 84-71 to No. 13-ranked Southern Oregon on Saturday night at the Mountain Avenue Gym.
 
The Mountaineers (8-1, 0-1 CCC) had four players score double-digit points and shot 41.4 percent from the field, but could now slow down the SOU combo of Ben DeSaulnier and Josh Washington, who combined for 41 points and shot 17-for-24 from the field.
 
Senior Blake O'Donnell led the Mountaineers with 18 points as he shot 8-for-14 from the floor. Sophomore guard Max McCullough finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists, freshman guard Jordan May scored 13 points with five assists and senior guard Cole Ashby added 10 points.
 
The Blue and Gold kept pace with the No. 13 Raiders in the first half, leading 29-28 with 3:37 left after a Brennan Pope layup. SOU then followed with a 9-0 run, taking a 40-33 lead into the locker room. The back-and-forth first 20 minutes featured 12 lead changes and four tied scores.
 
In the second half, the Raiders were able to extend their lead to as many as 15 points as both teams continued to shoot well from the field. SOU got to the free-throw line 17 times in second half, connecting on 13. Overall, the Raiders went 18-for-25 from the charity stripe, proving the difference as EOU went 9-for-11.
 
The Mountaineers used turnovers to their advantage with a 20-8 lead in points off of turnovers. EOU forced 18 Raider turnovers with 10 off steals, as McCullough led the way with four.
 
The Blue and Gold will next face another tough test, visiting No. 22 Oregon Tech on Sunday in Klamath Falls, Oregon at 6 p.m.
