McCullough’s 26 Points Not Enough as EOU Falls Short in Comeback at OIT

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Nearly coming away with a 16-point comeback victory, the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team ultimately fell 72-60 at No. 22 Oregon Tech on Sunday night.

Guard Max McCullough had 21-second half points and 26 for the game as the sophomore shot 9-for-18 from the field. McCullough and the Mountaineers (8-2, 0-2 CCC) pulled to within one point after he drained a jumper with 7:46 to play. The basket was a part of the Blue and Gold's 30-15 run in the second half.

From that point on, the Owls (7-4, 1-1 CCC) outscored EOU 18-7 to avoid the loss.

Freshman guard Jordan May had 13 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field. Senior guard Brennan Pope led the team with six rebounds while junior forward Peter Eke added six points and four boards.

The Blue and Gold got off to a slow start as the Owls opened with eight unanswered points, forcing a quick EOU timeout. The Mounties cut the OIT lead down to one point 10-9 after McCullough connected on his first three of the night with 13:50 to play in the half.

The Owls then got on a roll, scoring 29 points the rest of the half and taking a 39-23 halftime advantage.

The Mountaineers struggled to shoot in the first half at just 32.1 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes while Oregon Tech shot 44.8 percent. In the second half, EOU salvage their shooting percentage to reach 40 percent (22-for-55) for the night. The Mounties led 12-10 in steals, but were outrebounded 40-29.

On the Owls' side, Mitchell Fink scored 23 points with six assists and four rebounds. Harrison Steiger added 14 points and Tyler Hieb had 12.

The Mountaineers will take the week off before hosting Northwest Christian for the conference home opener on Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Quinn Coliseum.
