Mounties Sweep CCC Titles with 2-0 Shutout of Northwest in Finals

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – With its third shutout in four days, the Eastern Oregon women's soccer team captured its first Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship with a 2-0 victory over No. 6-seed Northwest on Monday at the Willamalane Sports Complex.

The Mountaineers (13-3-2, 9-1-1 CCC), who had already clinched a spot in the NAIA tournament with a regular season title, met up with a hungry Northwest (11-9, 6-5-0 CCC) squad that had already upset two higher-seeded opponents.

The first 20 minutes of the match were back and forth as EOU led 3-2 in shots. In the 21st minute, however, junior midfielder and CCC Newcomer of the Year Taylor Boyer blasted a shot from 25 yards out, beating Eagles' goalkeeper Kat Sanchez and finding the upper-right corner of the net to give the Mounties a 1-0 lead.

Eastern Oregon used the momentum from the goal to go right back on the offensive, as freshman forward Morgan Farrington netted her second goal of the tournament just over three minutes after Boyer's goal. Fellow freshman forward Camie Edgington drew the assist, sending a short cross to Farrington who scored from 10-yards out.

The Mountaineers held the two goal lead heading into halftime as the teams were tied 5-5 in shots after 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Eagles ramped up the pressure, looking to break through the Mountaineers' defense for the first time in the tournament. Despite a 10-2 shot advantage in the half, the EOU defense held tough, posting the fifth straight shutout and 13th of the season.

Coming into the game, EOU ranked fifth in the NAIA in shutouts per game (0.71) and total shutouts (12). Sophomore goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell made five saves in the match to post her 11th individual shutout.

For the Eagles, Jubilee Zevenbergen led the team with four shots, including two on goal. Katie Michkiosky and Bailey Travis each recorded three shots.

Despite the loss, Northwest claimed the CCC's second automatic qualifier to the NAIA Championships as EOU already owned the first. Both team's will await their first round opponents which will be announced on Nov. 13 at 12 p.m. Eastern time on the NAIA Women's Soccer Selection Show. The opening round of the tournament begins on Nov. 18 at campus sites.
