Mountaineers’ Record Season Ends in 1-0 Loss at Westmont in NAIA Championship

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The historic season for the Eastern Oregon women's soccer team (RV) ended in a 1-0 defeat at No. 7 Westmont in the Opening Round of the NAIA Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers' (13-4-2) incredible season includes the first Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season and tournament championships under first year head coach Jacob Plocher.

"I am really proud of the seniors. With so many new team members to be able to get the team to gel shows their leadership," said Plocher. "We thank all the seniors for all their hard work and dedication to this program."

The team recorded 13 shutouts, the second most in a single season by the Mounties. In just four losses on the season, the Mounties never lost by more than one goal and did not allow more than two goals in a single match. Additionally, they ranked fourth in the NAIA in goals allowed per game at 0.39 while allowing just eight goals in 19 matches.

In what was a physically played defensive match on Saturday, Westmont scored on a cross in the 26th minute that was the first shot on goal on the day. Bri Johnson took the ball down the right side and found Maddi Berthoud on the left post for a tap in from three yards out. Each team finished with two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Mountaineers put on the pressure as they looked for the tying goal. Despite no shots on net, EOU put consistent pressure on the Warriors' defense down the stretch, forcing six fouls in the half.

Senior midfielder Mariana Madrigal led the team with two shots in the match. Junior defender Chelsey Nicol and freshman forward Morgan Farrington accounted for the Mountaineers' two shots on net. Sophomore goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell had three saves.

"It is a tough loss, but I think we have been able to create a culture for what to expect with EOU women's soccer going forward," said Plocher. "While the loss hurts, it is something we can use to help us continue to grow for the future."

The Blue and Gold will say goodbye to a great senior class that played their last games on Saturday. Madrigal, defender Rosalie Salisbury, midfielder Yasmin Mookerdum, forward Anna Roslander and goalkeeper Cassidy Watkins leave as the first senior class to win a conference regular season and tournament title, while taking the program to just its second NAIA tournament ever.
