No. 15 EOU Advances to Elimination Round with Sweep of OLLU

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – For the third time in four years, the No. 15 Eastern Oregon volleyball team will play in the elimination, bracket-style rounds of the 38th NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship with a sweep of Our Lady of the Lake (25019, 25-17, 25-19) on Wednesday afternoon at the Tyson Events Center.

With a 2-0 record in Pool B, the Mountaineers (24-9) and No. 2 Viterbo will advance to the elimination rounds of the tournament due to their two-game leads over Georgetown and OLLU.

"We knew today's match was important to be able to advance in the tournament," said head coach Kaki McLean Morehead. "I'm proud of our resiliency in certain situations the last two matches, how well our offense is being run and the way our freshman are handling their first national tournament."

The Mounties used their momentum from Tuesday's sweep of Georgetown to swing with a lot of confidence in Wednesday's match. As a team, EOU hit .333 from the floor in the three sets including an incredible .550 in the second set. The Blue and Gold led the match in all categories with 42 total kills, five blocks, 39 assists and 52 digs.

Senior Emily Nay had a standout performance from the middle hitter position, recording nine kills on just 13 attacks, good for a .538 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Megan Bunn had an efficient match with eight kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Fellow senior middle hitter Madisen Garlie was also strong in the middle, posting eight kills, three block assist, one solo block and four aces.

Freshman setter Madison Pilon led the team with 23 assists, adding eight digs. Junior setter Sarah Carpenter chipped in with 12 assists. Freshman libero Kiley McMurtrey led the team with 13 digs.

The Mountie defense was stifling against the Saints, holding OLLU to a .112 hitting percentage. The Saints finished with 33 kills and 20 errors on 116 total attacks. On the flip side, EOU recorded 42 kills on just 96 total attacks.

EOU next faces a tough challenge against No. 2 Viterbo on Thursday at 4 p.m. Central time, 2 p.m. Pacific time. Viterbo has also swept both Georgetown and Our Lady of the Lake in pool play, advancing to the elimination rounds along with the Mountaineers.
