No. 15 Mounties Defeated by No. 2 Viterbo, Will Play Friday in Top-16

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Despite being swept on Thursday, the No. 15 Eastern Oregon volleyball team advances to the NAIA Final 16 bracket-style rounds for the second-straight season.

The Mountaineers (24-10) fell to Viterbo (25-20, 25-18, 25-18) in the final match of pool play for both teams. With a 2-1 record, the Mounties earned one of the two spots from Pool B to advance in the tournament. The Blue and Gold draw a tough test, however, facing No. 1-ranked and undefeated Lindsey Wilson (31-0) in the top-16 elimination matchup at 9 a.m. Central time, 7 a.m. Pacific time.

EOU battled the top-ranked V-Hawks closely in the first set, only trailing 10-9. Viterbo then gained momentum with eight of 10 points to grab an 18-11 lead, finishing it off 25-20.

The V-Hawks grabbed sizeable leads in the second and third sets early before the Mountaineers attempted a late comeback.

The Blue and Gold used good defense to keep the Viterbo attack in check, limiting the V-Hawks to a .206 hitting percentage with 16 errors. The Mounties finished with six blocks, equaling Viterbo's total. However, the V-Hawks also had a strong defensive effort, holding EOU to a .112 hitting percentage for the match.

Senior right-side hitter Isabelle Statkus was the team's most efficient hitter with eight kills to just one error and a .389 hitting percentage. Seniors Amanda Miller and Madisen Garlie each posted nine kills, but had five errors apiece.  Sophomore Megan Bunn added eight kills.

Senior middle hitter Emily Nay led the team with four block assists, followed by Statkus with three. Freshman setter Madison Pilon had 29 assists and freshman libero Kiley McMurtrey led the team with 15 digs.

The Mountaineers will next face No. 1 Lindsey Wilson with a chance to advance to the quarterfinals of the national tournament for the second-straight year. First serve will be at 9 a.m. Central time, 7 a.m. Pacific time from the Tyson Events Center. A live stream of the match will be aired live in the EOU booster room in Quinn Coliseum.
