No. 11 EOU Falls Just Short in 5-Setter at No. 15 Corban

SALEM, Ore. – In a wild five-set match for first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the No. 11 Eastern Oregon volleyball team was narrowly defeated by No. 15 Corban on Friday night.

The exciting five-setter went down to the wire, as the teams were tied 15-15 in the fifth set. Corban (19-7, 14-3 CCC) scored the final two points, however, grabbing sole possession of first place in the conference.

Sophomore outside hitter Megan Bunn finished with a career-high 20 kills to lead the Mountaineers (19-7, 13-4 CCC). Bunn and senior outside hitter Amanda Miller, who finished with 16 kills, formed a tough tandem that accounted for 36 of EOU's 55 kills in the match.

On the block, senior middle hitter Madisen Garlie was a force. The NAIA leader in blocks per set added to her totals with 10 more block assists. Also helping out up front was senior outside hitter Amy Arnzen (6) and seniors Emily Nay and Isabelle Statkus, who each finished with five. The Mountaineers dominated up front with a 16-5 advantage in blocks.

The match got off to a rocky start for the visiting Mountaineers who trailed by as many as 10 points in the first set. EOU began to change the momentum towards the end of the set, taking seven of the last 10 points before eventually falling 25-20.

Sets two and three belonged to the Mounties, however, as the Blue and Gold limited the Warriors to hitting percentages of .167 and .105. EOU hit .273 in set two and .306 in the third set. The Mountaineers took both sets 25-19.

The final two sets could have gone either way as Corban narrowly took both by two points. Down 24-17 in set four, the Mounties rallied for six-straight points to cut the deficit to just one point. Corban was able to find the set winner on the next point, however, defeating EOU 25-23.

Set five was the most even of the entire night as neither team led by more than two points. In the end, the Warriors were able to make the final play to capture the victory in the battle of top-25 rivals.

Freshman libero Kiley McMurtrey finished with 26 digs to lead all players. Freshman setter Madison Pilon had a double-double with 24 assists and 14 digs. Senior defensive specialist Malia Mills added 12 digs while junior setter Sarah Carpenter tallied 17 assists and two service aces.

The Mountaineers get another tough contest on Saturday, visiting Northwest Christian (15-7, 10-7 CCC) at 5 p.m. in Eugene, Oregon. With three matches remaining in the regular season, the Blue and Gold trail Corban by one game and is tied with College of Idaho for second place.
