(RV) Mountaineers Fall for 1st Time in CCC at Rocky Mountain

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon women's soccer team was defeated for the first time this season in Cascade Collegiate Conference action, falling 1-0 at Rocky Mountain on Sunday afternoon.

It was a quick strike by the Battlin' Bears in just the second minute of the match that proved to be the difference. Lauryn Gamache took a corner kick that deflected into the net off an EOU defender for the lone goal of the match.

"We lost a close one today against a very good Rocky team," said head coach Jacob Plocher. "We still control our fate, we just have to get ready for this weekend. We will regroup and be ready to play at home on Friday and Saturday."

The Mountaineers (8-3-2, 7-1-1 CCC) played the rest of the first half closely with Rocky Mountain as the teams were even in shots 7-7. In the second half, Eastern Oregon maintained the offensive pressure, but were unable to find the back of the net. The Blue and Gold led 13-10 in shots overall.

One of EOU's best chances to tie the match came with just 19 seconds left on the clock as senior midfielder Yasmin Mookerdum had a direct shot at net from inside the box, but Rocky's goalkeeper Maia Wetzel made an impressive save. Mookerdum then took the corner kick before time ran out, but it went out of bounds for a goal kick.

Sophomore forwards Cailin Koupal and Nan Kiebert led the team with three shots apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell finished with three saves.

Rocky Mountain moved into second place in the CCC with 21 points, with the Mountaineers still leading the way with 22 points.

EOU will return home to host Northwest Christian on Friday and Corban on Saturday with both matches at 11:30 a.m. as the Mountaineers look to claim their first conference title already with a spot in championship tournament clinched. Friday's match will be in support of Breast Cancer Awareness while Saturday will be Senior Day.
