LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon women's soccer team recorded its ninth shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over Northwest Christian at the EOU Soccer Field Friday afternoon.
"Our team played well today. I was satisfied with the way we responded after last weekend's performance," said head coach
Jacob Plocher. "We stayed poised and were able to put up two goals in the second half to give us the victory. Tomorrow is a big game for us, where we are trying to capture the CCC title and also sending off our talented seniors in their last home match."
With Friday's win, the Mountaineers can capture the programs first Cascade Collegiate Conference title, with a victory on Saturday against Corban, who currently is on a four game-winning streak.
Although the Mounties (9-3-2, 8-1-1 CCC) were unsuccessful in scoring in the first half, they managed to attack the Beacons (1-11, 1-9 CCC) with 12 shots and four corner kicks while holding Northwest Christian to only two shots.
It was not until the 59th minute when the Mountaineers were able to take the lead in the second half. Junior defender
Chelsey Nicol obtained her second assist of the year, finding sophomore forward
Cailin Koupal after a free kick. In the 87th minute,
Taylor Boyer iced the match for EOU as she sliced through the Beacons defense before beating the NCU goalkeeper.
This was the second goal of the year for Koupal and the fifth for Boyer. Sophomore goal keeper
Cydni Cottrell mustered three saves in the game and recorded her eighth shutout of the year.
The Mounties were dominant throughout the match with 14 shots and six corner kicks in the second half.
The Mountaineers had an impressive 12 players with multiple shots as the team ended the afternoon with 26 in the match. Sophomore forward
Nan Kiebert led the way with six shots and five on net. Boyer and Koupal followed with three shots each with all three on goal for Koupal.
Today's match marks the ninth win for the team, as the Mountaineers continue their perfect home record at 5-0.
Despite the loss, Northwest Christian snatched 13 saves. In the first half, Katie Hastings gathered seven saves, while Makenna Hadaller had six.
Emily Miller led the Beacons with two shots. Northwest Christian ended the day with five total shots in the match.
The Blue and Gold close out the CCC regular-season this Saturday at the EOU Soccer Field for Senior Day. Before tomorrow's match, the Mountaineers will honor five seniors:
Cassidy Watkins,
Yasmin Mookerdum,
Anna Roslander,
Rosalie Salisbury, and
Mariana Madrigal.
Kickoff from La Grande is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
