No. 17 EOU Women’s Hoops Suffers Heartbreaker at (RV) Oregon Tech, 69-65

Box Score

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The 17th-ranked EOU women's basketball team overcame a slow start to give itself a chance against (RV) Oregon Tech in a rematch of last season's conference tourney semifinal, but the Mountaineers ultimately came up a few plays short in a 69-65 defeat to the Owls on Sunday afternoon.

For the second straight game, junior guard Maya Ah You (Dias) eclipsed the 20-point mark with a game-high 21, while senior guard Darian Gasseling added 11 points, all of which came in the fourth quarter. Anchoring EOU's efforts on the glass, senior guard Payton Parrish tied a career-high with 12 boards to go along with six points.

After senior forward Ashley Knight tossed in a jumper to pull EOU to within one (9-8), Oregon Tech (15-5, 8-2 CCC) closed the opening quarter with a 14-3 run to go up by 12 (23-11), holding the Mountaineers to just one field goal in the final five minutes.

The second frame, however, was a different story, with EOU outscoring Oregon Tech, 28-15, to snag a one-point edge going into the locker room. The Blue and Gold made five consecutive field goals to anchor a 13-0 burst to open the quarter. With seven seconds remaining in the period, junior guard Reece Bauer found Dias for the jumper to give EOU a 39-38 lead at halftime.

After being outscored by four (13-9) in the third quarter, EOU entered the final frame with the three-point (51-48) deficit.

The Owls opened the fourth with a 9-4 run to go up eight (60-52) at the 6:44 mark, but Gasseling scored nine points amidst an 11-4 flurry to trim the deficit to one (64-63).

Oregon Tech scored in the paint on the ensuing possession, and EOU missed four of its last five shots to fall behind. Trailing by three (68-65) with less than 40 seconds left, the Blue and Gold had three chances to score before the Owls came up with a critical defensive board. Oregon Tech's Nohea Waiwaiole went 1-for-2 at the line to seal the contest, and EOU suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

While both teams took good care of the ball and shot over 43 percent from the field, Oregon Tech made seven more free throws and scored in crunch time when it mattered most.

With the loss, EOU dropped into a three-way tie for second place in the CCC with Oregon Tech and Northwest Christian.
