No. 6 EOU Volleyball Outlasts Pesky Northwest Squad, 3-1

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Three Mountaineers tallied double-figure kills, and the No. 6 EOU volleyball team hit .293 in the final two sets on the way to taking down Northwest, 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18), on Friday night in hostile territory.

Junior outside hitter Amanda Miller posted a team-best 18 kills and a season-high eight digs to pace the Blue and Gold, while junior hitter Madisen Garlie and senior swatter Makayla Lindburg added 11 kills apiece. Garlie also led EOU's blocking efforts, logging a season-high nine rejections (two solo) on the night.

Posting her fifth double-double of the season, senior setter Rachelle Chamberlain recorded 42 assists and 15 digs, while sophomore libero Holli Mullins collected 13 digs for the Mountaineers.

Knotted at 11 apiece in the opening frame, the two squads traded sideouts before EOU (12-1, 5-0 CCC) launched a 4-0 flurry to snag a four-point (16-12) lead. Northwest ultimately fought back to even the set at 18 all, but back-to-back kills by Miller sparked a 7-3 run to close the stanza.

The second set saw the Mountaineers hit a match-low .083, and the Eagles took advantage. Once again, the two teams were neck-and-neck early on and swung to a 13-all tie. Northwest utilized a 7-2 run to go up by five (20-15), and EOU never inched closer than three en route to yielding the frame, 25-20.

Following intermission, the Mountaineers coughed up a trio of attack errors and a service blunder to fall behind, 4-0. Down five (13-8), Garlie and junior right-side hitter Isabelle Statkus teamed up for two-straight blocks to spark an 8-3 run to tie the set at 16 apiece. After the Eagles scooted to a two-point edge (20-18), Miller hammered down one of her three kills amidst a 7-2 burst to close the set and give EOU a 2-1 lead.

Once again, Northwest (7-3, 4-1 CCC) seized an early edge, snagging an 8-4 advantage in the fourth set. That's when Miller, Lindburg, and Garlie rose to the occasion, pounding down kills to carry the Mountaineers to an 18-14 lead. The Eagles pulled to within three (20-17), but Miller continued to swing away, accounting for three of EOU's final five kills of the match to seal the deal.

With the victory, the Blue and Gold earned sole possession of first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) standings. The Mountaineers extended their winning streak to 12 and have taken 34 of the last 36 sets from their opponents.
