LA MIRADA, Calif. – Nearly seven hours after suffering an ugly three-set defeat, the No. 8 EOU volleyball team assembled a superb performance on both sides of the net, posting 12 blocks in a four-set (25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 15-16) triumph over No. 19 Biola on Thursday evening.
With the victory, EOU picked up its first win (1-5) over Biola during head coach Kaki McLean Morehead's time at the helm.
Leading EOU (2-1) from the outside, junior Amanda Miller tied a match-high with 14 kills, while junior middle hitter Madisen Garlie added nine kills and five block assists. Megan Bunn, a freshman hitter out of Banks, Ore., added eight kills and four digs. Senior setter Rachelle Chamberlain dished out 32 assists, and senior middle hitter Kasaundra Tuma aided EOU's defensive efforts with four block assists.
EOU came out of the gates on fire, posting 14 kills on 28 attempts without a single error in the first stanza. With a 7-5 lead, Bunn attacked for two kills amidst a 5-0 burst to break the set open, and the Mountaineers led by at least four for the remainder of the frame. Up 23-18, Bunn and senior hitter Makayla Lindburg hammered down kills to seal the first set.
In the second frame, EOU overcame an early 6-1 deficit and held Biola to a negative .029 clip to steal a 25-18 win. Three service aces helped the Eagles build a 5-0 lead before the Mountaineers mustered 14 of the next 22 points to go up, 14-13. With a one-point edge (18-17), EOU saw junior libero Malia Mills dial in three-straight aces amidst a 6-0 run to reach set point, and a Biola attack error yielded the stanza.
The Eagles (2-1) registered 19 kills and utilized an 8-1 burst midway through the third set on the way to making it a 2-1 match. Back-to-back Miller kills knotted the frame at 23 apiece, but a Mountie error and a kill by Karly Dantuma sealed it for Biola.
In the fourth set, the Blue and Gold recovered the momentum, swinging a .474 clip and logging seven block assists to lock the four-set triumph. At nine all, Garlie and Miller tallied kills to spark a 10-1 run, and EOU never looked back.
