LA MIRADA, Calif. – It was some kind of day for the No. 8 EOU volleyball team, as the Blue and Gold collected its second-straight sweep after surging past No. 15 Rocky Mountain, 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-15), on the final day of Biola's Summer Slam.
It took only 62 minutes to get the job done, and EOU (3-1) dished out 50 assists for 51 kills and a .469 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, Rocky Mountain (0-4) managed a .083 clip and only 24 kills in the defeat.
Junior outside hitter Amanda Miller tied a career-high effort for kills in a three-set match with 17, while freshman hitter Megan Bunn added 11 kills and one service ace. In addition, middle hitters Madisen Garlie and Kasaundra Tuma chipped in eight and seven kills, respectively. With 41 assists, senior setter Rachelle Chamberlain tied her fourth-best tally in a three-setter, and junior libero Malia Mills dove for a match-high nine digs.
Tied at three apiece in the opening frame, kills by Garlie and Bunn ignited a 13-4 run to give EOU some breathing room at 16-7. Bunn and Chamberlain pounded a couple down to lift the Blue and Gold to set point (24-13), and a Rocky Mountain setting error granted EOU a 1-0 advantage.
After falling behind by one (8-7) in the second stanza, the Mountaineers closed the frame with an 18-3 burst to stymie the Bears and forge a 2-0 lead. Up 16-10, Tuma and Miller accounted for seven of the final nine points to lock up the second set, 25-11.
In the third frame, EOU used runs of 6-1 and 5-0 to build a 10-point (14-4) lead, and the Lady Bears never recovered. After trading side-outs, Miller put one down to bring the Mountaineers to match point (24-13), and Rocky Mountain booked three more kills before Garlie delivered the winning kill for EOU.
