Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 19 EOU women's basketball team took to Interstate 84 West to battle Lewis and Clark in Pamplin Sports Center in Portland, Ore., on Sunday.
Despite playing in hostile territory, the Mountaineers extended their winning streak to six games, slipping past the Pioneers, 66-63.
EOU (11-2) was led by the junior duo of guard
Maya Ah You with 16 points while forward
Stormee Van Belle knocked in 15 to help the Mounties secure the win in Portland.
Junior guard
Reece Bauer controlled the boards, nabbing five rebounds along with six points and two assists. Junior
Jessica Sexson was a defensive woe for the Pioneers as the guard had two steals, two rebounds, and an assist to go along with seven points.
In the first stanza, EOU went off on a 3-0 lead, as Ah You scored three points on an old-fashion, three-point play. However, Lewis and Clark answered, going on a 10-5 run in the next four minutes.
With EOU down four, Bauer connected on a two-point jumper with 13 seconds until the second half, drawing the Mounties within two (17-15). Bauer's bucket would be the last score of the first quarter.
The Pioneers leaped out to a 23-15 lead to start the second, off two back-to-back threes from Sarah Anderson. However, EOU answered with a 10-6 run of their own, drawing within four (29-25).
Over the last two minutes of the half, the Mountaineers went on a 5-4 run ending the half with a two-point jumper (33-30), from junior forward
Mariah Swanson.
Into the third, Van Belle got things going for both teams, as the junior scored the first points of the half with a layup cutting the lead to 33-32. The Mounties finally retook the lead, (40-39) as junior guard
Payton Parrish sunk a three-point shot at the 5:45 mark.
As the third period came to an end, EOU led Lewis and Clark, 49-45, as the Pioneers (6-2) scored the last bucket for the period.
The Mounties held the lead throughout the fourth, until a three-pointer by Alyx Crager delivered the lead to the Pioneers 63-62, with 37 seconds to play. However, EOU refused to play discouraged, as the Mountaineers ended the game on a 4-0 run (66-63).
