No. 17 EOU Women’s Hoops Challenges Eastern Washington, Falls By Seven

CHENEY, Wash. – The 17th-ranked EOU women's basketball team gave NCAA Division I opponent Eastern Washington all it could handle, but a 16-point deficit proved too much to overcome in the exhibition contest, as the Mountaineers dropped a 67-60 decision on Sunday night. 
 
The Blue and Gold (2-0) pulled to within five (57-52) with 5:26 left in the affair after junior guard Maya Ah You nailed a jumper, and the Mountaineers stayed within single digits for the rest of the way.
 
Ah You led the squad with 14 points on 6-for-17 shooting, while junior guard Alisha Sorensen added 10 points, all coming from the charity stripe (10-for-12).
 
EOU got off to a slow start, missing 12 of its first 13 shots. The Blue and Gold dug itself a 16-point (35-19) hole and later trailed by 14 at halftime.
 
Junior forward Stormee Van Belle netted four points to open the third stanza, and the Blue and Gold mustered a 24-16 run to pull within six (51-45) after a bucket by Ah You. Senior guard Darian Gasseling drilled a triple to cut the deficit to five (53-48) at the 6:56 mark, but the Eagles responded with seven of the next 11 to go up by eight (60-52) with five and change on the clock.
 
Neither squad managed to put up points for over two minutes, and Eastern Washington nailed four free throws and a triple down the stretch to keep EOU at bay.

EOU shot 33.3 percent (19-for-57) from the floor and forced 19 turnovers in the losing effort.
