Lindburg, No. 7 EOU Volleyball Hammer Down Southern Oregon, 3-0

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Senior hitter Makayla Lindburg booked three critical kills in the third set, and the seventh-ranked EOU volleyball team clinched at least a share of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) regular-season title after sweeping (25-17, 25-18, 28-26) Southern Oregon on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.

For the Mountaineers (24-2, 17-1), the triumph marked their 20th sweep of the 2016 campaign, and the Blue and Gold also notched its 39th straight regular-season CCC victory at home.

Fast-forward to the third set, and EOU saw its seven-point (17-10) advantage turn into set point (25-24) for Southern Oregon. That's when Lindburg came to life, swinging for three-straight kills to regain the edge (27-26) for the Mountaineers, and then senior hitter Kasaundra Tuma recorded one to clinch the victory.

Lindburg paced the squad with 13 kills and four service aces, while junior middle hitter Madisen Garlie added 11 kills. Senior setter Rachelle Chamberlain posted a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs, while Garlie directed the blocking efforts with nine.

EOU tallied 12 of the first 17 points of the opening frame to pull away early. Junior defensive specialist Malia Mills delivered an ace to extend the lead to eight (16-8), but the Raiders responded with six straight to cut the margin to two (16-14). Garlie responded with two block assists and a pair of kills to spark an 8-3 burst, and EOU ultimately snagged the set, 25-17.

In the second frame, Southern Oregon (14-10, 11-6 CCC) crept to within three (17-14) before junior outside hitter Amanda Miller, Garlie, and Lindburg recorded kills to launch a 7-3 run to reach set point (24-17). Following a Raider sideout, junior right-side hitter Isabelle Statkus delivered a kill to cash in the frame.
