Big First Quarter Helps EOU Women's Basketball Topple No. 24 Warner Pacific, 82-61

PORTLAND, Ore.  – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team outscored No. 24 Warner Pacific 31-11 in the opening quarter, and the Mountaineers rode that advantage to an 82-61 triumph on Friday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play.

EOU tallied its 10th victory of the 2015-16 campaign and moved into sole possession of second place with a 6-1 record. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific (WPC) dropped to 10-3 and 5-2 in league play.

KEY PERFORMANCES
Four players tallied double digits for the Mountaineers, as senior forward Madeline Laan led the way with a game-high 18 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Jordan Klebaum nailed five three's for 15 points, while junior guard Darian Gasseling and sophomore guard Payton Parrish added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Kyell Hendryx paced the Knights with 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting.

THE STORYLINE
After missing its first three shots, EOU went 11-for-15 from the field for the remainder of the first quarter to pull away. Klebaum swooshed a trio of three's in the early going to put EOU on top, 13-4, and after a Knight layup, the Mountaineers netted 10 unanswered points to take a 23-6 lead with 2:55 left in the quarter. Gasseling and Parrish hit back-to-back three's to make it a 29-11 game, and then Laan scored a layup in the closing moments of the frame to give EOU a 20-point cushion.

The Mountaineers showed no signs of slowing down in the second quarter, scoring 13 of the first 17 points to snatch a 44-15 lead after another three by Parrish. EOU led by as many as 30 (49-19) in the first half before taking a 50-24 advantage into the locker room.

Although WPC shot over 57 percent in the second half, the Knights never got closer than 17. Brett Larson's layup made it a 65-48 game with 1:19 left in the third quarter, but senior guard Maloree Moss responded with a jumper at the buzzer to put the momentum back in the hands of the Mountaineers.

After Webber opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws, junior guard Ashley Knight and Klebaum knocked down jumpers from downtown to extend EOU's lead to 25 (75-50) with 7:30 left, and WPC never recovered.
