LA GRANDE, Ore. – For the second-straight contest in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play, the Eastern Oregon University men's soccer team fell short in extra time, as the Mountaineers dropped a 2-1 decision to Carroll via a golden goal in the 93rd minute.
"Obviously, overtime is not our friend," said head men's soccer coach Stan Rodrigues. "But this season is about gaining experience and being mentally tougher. We have lost to teams with greater maturity and from that we will learn, and once we do we will not let those contests slip away from us."
Key Performances
In goal, junior goalkeeper Alfredo Lara tallied nine saves for the Navy and Gold.
The Storyline
In the 28th minute, junior defender Osvaldo Martinez put EOU on the board via a penalty kick goal, as he fired his shot towards the left side past Carroll keeper Conor Smith.
The Saints (4-3-1, 2-1-1 CCC) eventually registered the equalizer in the 73rd minute after a pair of headers found Isaac Bostrom who scored from five yards out. Junior forward Fredy Rodriguez nearly came away with the game-winner in the 86th minute, but Smith was there to grab it for the save.
Once again, the Navy and Gold found itself in overtime. After Terry Cox found Jose Porras on the right side of the field, Porras dribbled past his defender and fired it through the net to win the game for Carroll.
The Saints outshot the Mountaineers, 23-9.
