Men's Basketball Weekly Notes: Northwest and Evergreen

This Weekend
This weekend the Mountaineers travel to Washington to face Northwest University Eagles on Friday and The Evergreen State College Geoducks to close out the 2014-15 regular season. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. PT.
 
CCC Tournament
The 2015 Cascade Collegiate Conference Men's Basketball Tournament will feature the top eight teams in the regular season standings. Seeding will be based on the regular season standings with the highest remaining seed hosting the round. The winners of the CCC regular season and the CCC tournament earn automatic bids to the NAIA Division II Championship.
 
One Back of CCC Tournament
Entering this weekend the Mountaineers sit one game out of eighth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. To qualify for the CCC Tournament, EOU must finish in the top eight. Currently, Northwest University, who the Mountaineers play on Friday, Feb. 20 holds the eighth spot. The quarterfinals of the CCC Tournament start on Feb. 25 at the highest seeds place.
 
Looking at the Opponents
Northwest

The Eagles of Northwest University enter this weekend with a 15-13 overall record and 5-11 in the CCC. The Eagles currently hold the last spot in the CCC Tournament as they sit a game in front of the Mountaineers. The Eagles had a three game winning streak snapped last weekend and now have dropped two straight. Northwest is averaging 71.1 points per game and are led by Dak Shagren, who is averaging 15.0 points per game.
Evergreen
The Geoducks enter this weekend with a 4-19 overall record and are 1-15 in conference action this season. Their lone conference win came on Feb. 6 when they defeated Oregon Tech, 73-71. After that victory, Evergreen has dropped three straight. The Geoducks are scoring 74.4 points per game and are led by Jordan Dam's 15.0 points per game. The Geoducks are making 8.8 3-pointers per game, which ranks them, 12th in the nation. Evergreen is allowing opponents to score 84.0 points per game and to shoot over 50 percent from the floor in their contests this season.
 
Earlier this Season
The Mountaineers faced Northwest and Evergreen earlier this season. EOU came away with two victories at Quinn Coliseum. EOU defeated Evergreen, 90-84 and Northwest, 100-82. These were the first conference games of the season for EOU.
 
Last Weekend
Last weekend the Mountaineers closed out their 2014-15 regular season home schedule. On Friday night, Jordan Carter of Corban hit a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining in the second half to lift the Warriors to a 65-64 victory over Eastern Oregon at Quinn Coliseum. De'Sean Mattox scored a game-high 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting, to lead the Mountaineers. Bryan McGriff followed with 20 for the Mountaineers to round out the double figure scorers for EOU, who lost their fifth straight contest. The next night, EOU struggled to shoot the ball as Northwest Christian University held the Mountaineers to 30 percent shooting from the floor. The Beacons shot 52 percent en route to a 77-60 victory over Eastern Oregon on Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum. Bryan McGriff led the way for the Mountaineers with 27 points. De'Sean Mattox and Case Rada followed with 11 points apiece to round out the double-figure scorers for EOU.
 
EOU on the Road
The Mountaineers hold a record of 4-6 in games held away from Quinn Coliseum this season. Their last road victory came on Jan. 17 when they defeated Corban University in Salem, Ore.
 
Blocks
Eastern Oregon continues to lead the nation in block shots on the season. EOU has blocked 144 shots this season and are aveaging 5.5 blocks per game. Kalvin Johanson leads the way as he has recorded 60 blocks on the season. His 60 blocks is six blocks away from tying the single season school record, which he set last season.
