Women's Basketball Weekly Notes: Corban and NCU

This Weekend
Friday, February 13 EOU basketball will take on Corban University while honoring Breast Cancer Awareness for THINK PINK night. We invite all fans to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness and the first 60 EOU students will receive a free EOU THINK PINK shirt. Saturday, February 14 we will be showing some love to our seniors on Valentine's Day. Action kicks off at 5:30 when the women take on Northwest Christian with men to follow at 7:30. In honor of Valentine's Day its RED night in Quinn. Fans wearing red will receive $2.00 off their admission and the first 100 fans will be entered to win a free pizza from Dominos. EOU Athletics will be giving away 20 free pizzas.
 
No. 21
For the second straight week, the Mountaineers climbed two positions, from No. 23 to No. 21, in the latest edition of the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The 21st ranking is the highest of the season for EOU.
 
Scouting the Opponents
Corban

The Warriors of Corban University enter this weekend with a 17-10 and 11-4 record in the CCC. Corban has won five of their last six games and eight of their last 10. Their losses over the last 10 games have been to Eastern Oregon and Southern Oregon. The Warriors, currently sit in third place in the CCC and have clinched a home game for the quarterfinals of the CCC Tournament. Leading the way for Corban is Tara Van Weerdhuizen. Van Weerduizen is averaging 13.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game. As a team the Warriors are second in the nation with 145 blocks on the season, led by Van Heerduizen, who has 93 blocks. Van Weerdhuizen holds the single season record for  the Warriors with 123 block shots in 2011-12.
Northwest Christian
Just two weeks ago, the Beacons were tied for seventh and on the verge of missing the post season. Now, after winning four of their last five games, NCU has jumped to fifth place and sit just a half game behind Evergreen for fourth and one win away from clinching their third straight CCC tournament appearance. After averaging just 3.5 points per game during her first three years, senior Melyssa Weber has exploded this season, leading the Beacons with 10.5 ppg. She is also second on the team in assists and third in rebounds and steals. The Beacons hold a record of 11-12 and 7-8 in the CCC.
 
Points Allowed
This season, the Mountaineers are only allowing opponents to score 56.3 points per game. This is the second fewest in the CCC. This is the tenth best in the NAIA this season.
 
Three-Pointers
Eastern Oregon has made the most 3-pointers in the Cascade Conference this season as they have made 172 3-pointers. EOU is averaging 6.9 3-pointers per game. The Mountaineers have made the most 3-pointers in the CCC for the last five years.
 
CCC Tournament
The 2015 Cascade Collegiate Conference Women's Basketball Tournament will feature the top eight teams in the regular season standings. Seeding will be based on the regular season standings with the highest remaining seed hosting the round. The winners of the CCC regular season and the CCC tournament earn automatic bids to the NAIA Division II Championship. The Mountaineers have clinched a home game for the first round of the conference tournament. The game will be played on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
 
Last Weekend
EOU used a 24-2 run, spanning both halves, to cruise to an 82-51 victory at Quinn Coliseum Friday night. Jordan Klebaum scored a game-high 20 points, including six 3-pointers, as the Mountaineers extended their win streak to six. Madeline Laan followed with 15 points and collected nine rebounds. Maya Ah You rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points. Maloree Moss dished out 10 assists on the evening.
 
What's Up Next
EOU closes out the 2014-15 regular season on the road as they travel to Northwest and Evergreen on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21. Both games start at 5:30 p.m. PT.
