Box Score COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon University men's soccer team made strides on Sunday evening, as the Mountaineers used a three-goal second stanza to push past Walla Walla, 4-1, and claim their second-straight victory.
"We played with more energy tonight than Friday night, and it showed," said head men's soccer coach Stan Rodrigues. "I was proud of Edgar Cano for organizing the defense well, and Adam Afromsky for playing in the middle well. The second lineup played extremely well for us and had valuable minutes which will help with experience."
Key Performances
A quartet of Mountaineers notched goals for EOU, as junior striker Fredy Rodriguez, junior midfielder Robert Wilson, freshman forward Rene Gutierrez, and junior defender Osvaldo Martinez each connected on frame.
In the box, junior goalkeeper Alfredo Lara tallied two saves in just over 86 minutes of play, while junior keeper Jordan Hillmick also saw action in the second half for EOU.
The Storyline
EOU put Walla Walla (0-8, 0-8 CCC) on its heels right from the get-go, as freshman midfielder Steven Beaudry found Wilson for the header from close range in the 5th minute to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
The Wolves tried to counter with the equalizer just over two minutes later, but Lara saved a shot attempt by Martin Chinn.
Although the Navy and Gold didn't score for the remainder of the period, EOU put seven more shots on frame.
Things started to come together for the Mountaineers in the second half, as Gutierrez and Rodriguez each tallied goals in a stretch of 35 seconds to put Walla Walla away.
In the 66th minute, Martinez added to the damage, as he capitalized off EOU's corner-kick opportunity with a goal to put the Mountaineers on top, 4-0.
Walla Walla tacked on a goal if its own in the 89th minute, but it was too little, too late for the Wolves.
