EOU came in at No. 17 in the seventh edition of the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Mountaineers feel one spot from No. 16 to No. 17 this week.
Scouting the Opponent
College of Idaho
The Yotes of College of Idaho come into the Friday night matchup with EOU with an 11-10 overall record and a 8-5 record in CCC action. In the Yotes last game against Warner Pacific on Feb. 1, College of Idaho hit a school record 18 three pointers. This was the fourth time this season the Yotes have made 15-or-more three pointers in a game, two of which happened to be exhibition games this season. College of Idaho is averaging 74.8 points per game and are led by Erica Martinez, who is averaging 16.5 points per game. Martinez is leading the Yotes with 55 made three pointers on the year and is shooting 41 percent from behind the arc.
Previous Meeting
The Yotes and Mountaineers met earlier this season on Jan. 10 when the Mountaineers defeated College of Idaho, 85-83.
Nikki Osborne hit a layup with 2.5 seconds remaining in the game to give EOU the win.
Brittney Newcomb scored a game high 33 points for EOU.
Kassy Larson followed with 20 for EOU as she collected 16 rebounds, 12 on the offensive end. Dayna Drager scored 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting to lead College of Idaho.
Last Weekend
Last weekend the Mountaineers went 1-1 and suffered its first loss at Quinn Coliseum in 33 games. EOU defeated Warner Pacific, Friday night before falling to Concordia the next night. Sophomore
Kelsey Hill came off the bench and scored 20 points to lead the Mountianeers to a 83-59 win over Warner Pacific. The Mountaineers used a game of runs to grow its lead to as many as 35 late in the second half. The Knights had no answer for EOU and EOU came away with an 83-59 victory. The very next night, The Concordia Cavaliers shot 56 percent from the floor and 58 percent from behind the arch to upset Eastern Oregon University on Saturday evening at Quinn Coliseum. The loss snapped EOU's home winning streak at 33 games. Janee Klarich hit seven three pointers and led the Cavaliers in scoring with 28. Caitlyn McCutcheon followed with 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Brittney Newcomb led EOU with 28 points.
20 Win Seasons
EOU is one win away from having 20 plus wins in 10 of 14 years under the direction of Coach Weissenfluh. It would be the third straight year with 20 plus wins.
CCC Tournament
Eastern Oregon University currently holds the top spot in the CCC. The Mountaineers hold a two game lead over Oregon Tech. EOU and Oregon Tech are the only women's basketball teams to have clinched a spot in the CCC Tournament, which starts on Feb. 25. Only the top eight teams qualify for the Tournament.
No. 1 in the Nation
Eastern Oregon's
Brittney Newcomb and
Maloree Moss currently rank No. 1 in the nation in Free throw percentage and assist to turnover ratio. Newcomb is shooting 91.5 percent from the line, while Moss has an assist to turnover ratio of 2.9 on the season.
Raining Threes
The Mountaineers currently rank seventh overall in the NAIA in total three pointers made on the season. EOU has made 203 three pointers on the season. Leading the way for the three ball attack is Newcomb, who has hit 77 three pointers on the season.
