Men's Basketball Weekly Notes: College of Idaho

Scouting the Opponent
College of Idaho

The Yotes of College of Idaho enter this Friday night matchup against EOU on a seven game winning streak. The Yotes are currently ranked No. 8 in the NAIA. Along with a seven game winning streak, the Yotes have won 11 straight contests at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. C of I's Demetrius Perkins is the reigning CCC Red Lion Player of the Week. Perkins is second on the team in scoring as he averages 14.5 points per game. Taylor Pruett leads the team in scoring averaging 15.7 points per game. The Yotes are averaging 87.5 points per game and are shooting 47.0 percent from the floor. College of Idaho leads the nation in total blocks (129) and blocks per game (5.2) this season.

Last Weekend
For the first time in conference play this season, EOU went 2-0 with wins over Warner Pacific and then-No. 21 Concordia. On Friday night against Warner Pacific, the Mountaineers and Knights only saw four lead changes in the game. Tony Eackles Jr. led EOU with 18 points. Trailing 17-16 EOU used a 9-0 run to take the lead back and continued to grow the lead to 12 points, 42-30 to go into halftime. The Knights did not go away quietly in the second half and continued to battle EOU. They had cut the Mountaineers lead down to a one position game multiple times but EOU answered and grew its lead back to seven points, EOU clinched the game at the free throw line and defeated Warner Pacific, 72-66. Saturday night the Mountaineers and Cavaliers battled and the game came down to the last position. With 5.5 seconds left on the clock Eackles hit the game-winning fall away jumper to give EOU an 82-80, upset of Concordia. EOU controlled the game early as the Mountaineers led the first 16 minutes of the contest. However, Concordia battled and came back to take the lead at halftime. With the game tied at 51 with 15 minutes to play, neither team held a lead larger than four points. EOU scored the last six points of the game capped by Eackles shot to clinch the victory.

Two Game Winning Streak
Eastern Oregon swept its first weekend of conference action this past weekend when the Mountaineers defeated Warner Pacific and Concordia. This is the Mountaineers first two game winning streak since, Nov. 22 and Dec. 6 when EOU defeated Lewis-Clark state and Evergreen.

Previous Meeting vs. C of I
The Yotes and Mountaineers squared off earlier this season at Quinn Coliseum, which saw College of Idaho defeat the Mountaineers, 75-67, on Jan. 10. The Yotes were ranked No. 23 in the nation for that contest.

Verse Ranked Opponents
This season EOU have faced four teams that have been ranked in the top 25. The Mountaineers are 1-3 on the season. The only win came against then-No. 21 Concordia last Saturday night. EOU has faced two top ten opponents on the season and have lost both of those contests.

Blocks
EOU has recorded 108 blocks on the season. This ranks third in the nation in most block shots on the season. EOU is averaging 4.7 blocks per game, which is fourth best in the nation. Leading the nation is College of Idaho who has recorded 129 blocks on the season.

Conference Tournament
The Mountaineers have five remaining games in the regular season and currently have a record of 14-9 overall and 5-8 in CCC action. EOU currently sits in the eight spot in the conference standings, which would get the Mountaineers in the CCC Tournament. The Conference Tournament takes the top eight teams in the conference for the tournament. Tournament starts on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
