Conference Champs
For the second straight season, the Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team has won the Cascade Collegiate Conference Regular Season Title. The Mountaineers won the conference by a one game, over Oregon Tech. With the win, the Mountaineers claimed one of the CCC automatic berths to the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship held in Sioux City, Iowa.
CCC Tournament
The Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon have claimed the top spot in the CCC Tournament presented by U.S. Bank. EOU opens up play on Tuesday, Feb. 25, when they host Northwest Christian at 7 p.m. Oregon Tech, College of Idaho and Southern Oregon round out the top four teams in the tournament.
Scouting the Beacons
Northwest Christian enters the quarterfinals on a two game winning streak. The Beacons have defeated Concordia and Corban in its last two games. Northwest Christian has three players scoring in double-figures, led by Hannah Frederick, who is averaging 11.7 points per game. On the season the Beacons are averaging 66.9 points per game and shooting 40.5 percent from the floor. Opponents are scoring on 73.5 points per game and shooting 40.7 percent from the field against the Beacons.
Previous Two Meetings
EOU has faced Northwest Christian twice this season and won both of the games. On Jan. 17 the Mountaineers defeated the Beacons, 71-56, at Quinn Coliseum. Around a month later, EOU traveled to Eugene to face the Beacons and came away with a 78-66 victory.
Last Weekend
Last weekend the Mountaineers rallied in the second half of both contests to come back and defeat Northwest and Evergreen. On Friday night, EOU shot 63 percent in the second half to come from behind to defeat Northwest University, 77-66. Saturday, EOU found down by nine in the second half. Redd and Newcomb started to heat up from behind the arc. Redd hit back to back threes and Newcomb hit another to bring the Mountaineers within four points, 54-50. Newcomb tied the game at 56-56 after hitting another three pointer with 3:19 to go in the contest.
Maloree Moss put EOU on top as she hit a three pointer, 59-56, with 2:39 left in the game. The Geoducks answered back on a LaNiec Weatherspooner jumper to bring Evergreen back within one point, 59-58.The Mountaineers picked up the defense and held the Geoducks to two more points for the rest of the game and EOU came back to claim a 63-60 victory and win the CCC Regular season title.
Best in the Nation
Senior
Brittney Newcomb leads the NAIA in free throw percentage. On the season, Newcomb has hit 91.3 percent of her free throws. She has made 147-of-161 free throws on the season. On Dec. 21st she was a perfect 16-of-16 from the line.
Three Pointers
On the season EOU has hit 244 three pointers, which is seventh best in the nation, and are making 8.1 three pointers per game, tenth best in the NAIA. Leading the three point charge for EOU is Newcomb who has hit 92. Following Newcomb is Redd who has 57.
Payton Parrish is the only other EOU player with over 30. Parrish has it 34 threes on the season.
