Women's Basketball Weekly Notes: Corban and NCU

The Mountaineers fell three spots in the eighth edition of the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll the national office announced Tuesday. EOU came in at No. 20 this week. This is the third consecutive week that EOU has dropped in the rankings.

Scouting the Opponents
Corban

The Warriors of Corban University enter the game against the Mountaineers with an 11-15 overall record and 6-8 record in CCC action. The Warriors have lost its last seven contests. The last win for Corban came on Jan. 11 when they defeated Concordia, 64-57. Corban is led by Tara Vanweerdhuizen who is averaging 14.3 points per game and collecting 10.0 rebounds per game. Vanweerdhuizen has collected 11 double-doubles on the season, which ranks her tied for 12th in the NAIA. The Warriors are averaging 60.7 points per game and are allowing 64.7.
Northwest Christian
Northwest Christian enters this weekend with an 7-16 overall record and 3-11 in conference play. The Beacons won its last contest on Feb. 11 when they defeated Warner Pacific, 79-67 to snap a two game losing streak. The Beacons have two players scoring in double-figures led by Hannah Frederick who is averaging 11.9 points per game. Northwest Christian is averaging 65.6 points per game while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor. Their opponents are averaging 73.4 points per game and shooting 40.6 percent from the floor.

CCC Tournament
As of Feb. 11, five times have clinched a spot in the 2014 Cascade Collegiate Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, which starts on Feb. 25. The top eight teams in the CCC will advance to the tournament. Currently the Mountaineers hold the top spot in the standings with four games to be played.

Top in the Nation
Senior guard Brittney Newcomb continues to lead the nation in free throw percentage. This season Newcomb is hitting 91.0 percent of her free throws. Haley Perkins of Union (Ky.) is second on the nation, as she is hitting 89.5 percent from the line.

Last Weekend
The Mountaineers went 0-1 last weekend with its loss coming to College of Idaho. With seven seconds to go the Mountaineers trailed by three points, 67-64, Nicole Redd fired a three up as the clock expired but the shot fell short and the College of Idaho Yotes defeated Eastern Oregon, 67-64. Brittney Newcomb led the way for EOU with 19 points. Nicole Redd followed with 17 points. EOU shot 33.9 percent from the floor and 29 percent from behind the arc in the contest.

Earlier this Season
Earlier this season, Eastern Oregon played both Corban and Northwest Christian at Quinn Coliseum. The Mountaineers defeated both the Warriors and Beacons. EOU used a late second half push to extend its conference winning streak to 28 straight games with a 71-56 victory over Northwest Christian Universityon Friday evening at Quinn Coliseum. The Mountaineers were led by Kelsey Hill who scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting. Brittney Newcomb followed with 12 points for EOU. Chandler Gabrio scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Beacons. The Mountaineers continued the winning ways on Saturday as they used a 32-6 run to end the first half to take control of the game and defeat the visiting Corban University Warriors, 73-61 Saturday evening at Quinn Coliseum. Nicole Redd led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
