Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Concordia Cavaliers shot 56 percent from the floor and 58 percent from behind the arch to upset No. 16 Eastern Oregon University on Saturday evening at Quinn Coliseum. The loss snapped EOU's home winning streak at 33 games.
Janee Klarich hit seven three pointers and led the Cavaliers in scoring with 28. Caitlyn McCutcheon followed with 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Brittney Newcomb led EOU with 28 points.
The Mountaineers raced out to an early lead as they scored the first five points of the contest. Eastern Oregon could not take advantage of the early lead as the Cavaliers battled back and tied the game at 5-5. The game remained close and with 15:15 left in the first half EOU led 11-10.
Eastern Oregon looked as if they would pull away as they went on a 7-0 run to take an eight point lead, 18-10. However, Concordia continued to battle and kept the game close as they cut the Mountaineers lead down to two points, 18-16.
EOU continued to extend its lead and grew the lead back to nine points, 29-20, after a pair of free throws by Newcomb. The Mountaineers offense struggled after taking the nine point lead as they only scored three points for the remainder of the first half. During EOUs struggles, Concordia scored 20 points to take an eight point, 40-32 lead at halftime.
The Cavaliers continued to extend its lead in the second half as they grew the lead to 11 points with 15:50 left in the game after a pair of free throws by McCutcheon. Concordia continued to grow their lead and a minute and a half later, Concordia led by 15 points, 53-38.
After the Cavaliers took the 15 point lead the Mountaineers slowly started to mount a comeback. EOU held Concordia without a point for three minutes and trimmed the Cavaliers lead down to two points, 53-51, after a jumper by
Kassy Larson.
The game remained close the rest of the way as both teams traded leads. With 7:10 left in the half, EOU held a lead by three points, 66-63, after a Newcomb three pointer. It looked as if EOU would start to pull away after
Nyesha Joseph hit a pair of free throws EOU led by five points, 68-63.
Concordia battled back and took a two point lead, 72-70, two minutes later after a pair of free throws from Lexi Campbell. EOU continued to battle and tied the game one more time at 76 but the Cavaliers responded and took the lead. After the Cavaliers regained the lead at, 77-76, Concordia never trailed again and upset the No. 16 EOU by a score of 85-78.
The Mountaineers return to action next Friday, Feb. 7 when they travel to Caldwell, Idaho to face College of Idaho at 5:30 MT. Concordia is back in action next Friday when they host Corban at 5:30 p.m. PT.
