EUGENE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team swept Northwest Christian University, 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 on Friday night.

Amanda Miller led the Mountaineers with 11 kills on the evening. Kasaundra Tuma and Emily Nay followed with nine kills, apiece. Rachelle Chamberlain dished out 33 assists and Jessalyn Smith recorded a game-high 22 digs.

The Mountaineers looked as if they would get out to a fast start in set one against the Beacons. EOU opened up the set by scoring four of the first five points. Northwest Christian responded by scoring the next five points to take a 6-4 lead over EOU.

The Mountaineers and Beacons remained locked in a tight set. With the set tied at 13-13, EOU and Northwest Christian went back and forth and found themselves tied at 17-17. EOU looked like they had taken control by extending their lead to three, 20-17, but the Beacons battled back to tie the set at 22-22. EOU claimed set one, 25-23, scoring three of the last four points.

The Mountaineers started to click and began to pull away from Northwest Christian early in the second set. With EOU ahead, 4-3, the Mountaineers scored the next four points to take an 8-3 lead. EOU continued to extend their lead, and after a kill by Isabelle Statkus, the Mountaineers led 18-12.

After facing a six point deficit, the Beacons slowly started to make a comeback against EOU, bringing the score as close as 19-16. The Mountaineers did not let the Beacons get closer than three points for the rest of the set as they rallied off six of the last nine points to take the second set, 25-19.

Eastern Oregon jumped out to another fast start over Northwest Christian in the third set finding themselves ahead, 8-4. EOU continued to hold the lead as the Beacons attempted to battle back. Northwest Christian trimmed the Mountaineers lead to one, 12-11, after an EOU attack error.

The Mountaineers grew their lead back to four points, 17-13, after a kill by Statkus. Northwest Christian did not go away easily and battled back to tie the set at 17-17. After the Beacons tied the Mountaineers regained control and did not let the Beacons take the lead. EOU took set three 25-22.

EOU concludes their 2014 regular season tomorrow, Nov. 8, in Salem, Ore. The Mountaineers face Corban University at 5 p.m.
