EOU Sweeps Corban; Clinches Share of Title

SALEM, Ore. – The No. 11 Eastern Oregon University volleyball team wrapped up their 2014 regular season by sweeping Corban University, 26-24, 25-20, 25-16, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Mountaineers clinched a share of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Regular Season Title.

Amanda Miller led the way for the Mountaineers as she recorded a match-high 15 kills. Kasaundra Tuma followed with 11 and Katina Ferguson rounded out the Mountaineers with double-digit kills with 10. Rachelle Chamberlain dished out 41 assists and Jessalyn Smith recorded 19 digs. Miah Smith led the way for the Warriors with 13 kills.

The first set for the Mountaineers and Warriors was a close one. Each time Eastern Oregon looked as if they would put Corban away, the Warriors had an answer. A kill by Miller gave EOU a, 13-9, lead over Corban.

Eastern Oregon continued to hold onto a four point lead, but the Warriors did not go away quietly. After anEmily Nay kill, EOU led the Warriors, 23-19. However, Corban responded by scoring the next four points to tie the set at 23-23. EOU claimed set one after a Miller kill, 26-24.

The Warriors and Mountaineers stayed locked into a close second set after the first ten points. It looked as if EOU was pulling away as they grew their lead to three points, 11-8, after a Ferguson kill.

However, the Warriors continued to battle and took the lead at 18-17. The Mountaineers answered by scoring six straight points, taking a 24-18 lead. EOU took the second set, 25-20, on a Miller kill.

Eastern Oregon pulled away early in the third set against Corban, as a kill by Miller gave EOU an early 5-1 lead, however, the Warriors battled back and tied the set at 6-6. EOU began to pull away at this point and went on a 9-2 run to take a 16-8 lead.

After taking the lead, EOU did not let the Warriors back in the game. EOU took a nine point lead, 19-10, after a Kendra De Hoog kill. The Mountaineers recorded the sweep as Tuma recorded back-to-back kills to give EOU the set, 25-17, the match, and their first CCC Regular Season Volleyball Title.

The Mountaineers return to action next Friday, Nov. 14 when they host the semifinals of the CCC Volleyball Tournament.
