Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team shot 55 percent from the floor en route to an 93-84 victory over Walla Walla University on Tuesday evening.
Kyllian Wood paced the Mountaineers by scoring 28 points on 8-of-11 shooting and collecting 20 rebounds. Following Wood in scoring was
Craig Tucker with 16 points.
Kevin Attila and
Trevor Phillips rounded out the double-figure scorers for EOU with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
The Mountaineers got off to a fast start against the Wolves. EOU started the game with a 9-0 run. Attila hit the first three pointer of the game and Tucker followed with back to back three pointers, giving EOU the 9-0 lead.
EOU continued to slowly add to its lead and grew the lead to 12 points, 17-5, after Wood corralled Tuckers missed shot and put in the layup. He was fouled on the play and made the layup. Eastern Oregon continued to hold onto a 12 point lead until late in the first half.
With EOU ahead by 10 points, 36-26, the Wolves started to mount a small comeback and trimmed the Mountaineers lead down to six points, 38-32. However, Eastern Oregon grew its lead back to double-digits to go into halftime with a 45-34 lead.
The Mountaineers extended its lead early in the second half of the game. EOU started the half on a 14-2 run, which allowed the Mountaineers to take a 22 point lead, 59-37. The Wolves started to chip away and slowly comeback from the deficit.
With EOU ahead by 20 points, 64-44, Walla Walla went on an 11-4 run to trim the Mountaineers lead down to 13 points, 68-55. It looked as if the Mountaineers would extend its lead again to the twenty point range. However, Walla Walla had other plans.
The Wolves continued to chip away at EOU's lead and cut the lead to ten points, 80-70, late in the second half. Walla Walla would not go away and with 49 seconds remaining in the game the Wolves cut the Mountaineers lead down to single digits for the first time in the second half, 87-80.
That would be as close as the Wolves would get in the game and EOU clinched the victory from the free throw line. EOU came away with a nine point victory, 93-84. The victory snapped a two game losing streak for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Jan. 10 when they host College of Idaho at Quinn Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
