Strong Second Half Leads EOU To Victory

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team came back from trailing nine points at halftime by scoring 52 points in the second half and shooting 51 percent to defeat Southern Oregon University Raiders, 89-80, Saturday night at Bob Riehm Arena.

Brittney Newcomb led the Mountaineers with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Nicole Redd followed with 16 points and Maloree Moss rounded out the double-figure scorers for EOU with 14 points.

The Raiders opened the first half on fire as they shot 50 percent from the field and raced out to an early eight point lead, 13-5, in the first four minutes of the contest. The Mountaineers continued to chip away and trimmed the lead to four points at one point, but Southern Oregon extended its lead back to eight points, 19-11, in the minute.

With Southern Oregon leading 25-18, the Mountaineers went on a 5-0 run to cut the Raiders lead down to two points, 25-23, on a layup by Newcomb. The remainder of the first half stayed close until there was 3:47 left in the first half, as Southern Oregon extend its lead back to seven points, 37-30.

EOU continued to chip away and with two and a half minutes to go to halftime Eastern Oregon had cut the lead to four points, 39-35, on a three pointer by Newcomb. However, the Mountaineers did not get any closer than four points for the rest of the first half and Southern Oregon grew its lead back to nine points, 46-37, to go into halftime.

With the Mountaineers down six points, 55-49, Eastern Oregon's offense clicked and the defense held the Raiders scoreless for a five minute stretch. During the stretch the Mountaineers scored 20 straight points, to take a 14 point lead after a Payton Parrish layup.

Eastern Oregon grew its lead to as many as 15 points, 75-60, with eight and a half minutes to go in the game. Southern Oregon would not go away easily as the Raiders started to score and bring the Mountaineers lead down to 11 points, 75-64, before EOU extend its lead back to 15 points, 79-64.

The Raiders continued to chip away at the lead but EOU held off the Raiders off and came away with a 89-80 victory.

Eastern Oregon returns to action next Friday, Jan. 31 when they host Warner Pacific at Quinn Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
