Women's Basketball Weekly Notes: Concordia and Warner Pacific

Newcomb POW
For the second time this season senior guard Brittney Newcomb has been named Red Lion Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Week. She led the Mountaineers to two victories over ranked opponents. Against No. 17 Southern Oregon, Newcomb scored a game-high 30 points and dished out 13 assists for her first double-double of the season. The 13 assists is a season high in assists. She followed that performance with a 29 point performance against Oregon Tech. She was a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line. Newcomb is averaging 24.0 points per game which is third best in the NAIA.

Scouting the Opponents
Concordia

The Cavaliers of Concordia come into this weekend with 3-11 record and 1-2 in the CCC. Concordia is averaging 39.6 points per game and shooting 38.2 percent from the floor. Leading the Cavaliers is Caitlyn McCutcheon, who is averaging 13.4 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per game. McCutcheon has collected five double-doubles on the season. Opponents are scoring 76.9 points per game and shooting 41.6 percent against the Cavaliers. Concordia has won its last two games.
Warner Pacific
Warner Pacific comes into this weekend with a 4-10 overall record and 0-3 in the CCC. The Knights are led by Ali Campbell who leads the team with 10.3 points per game and collects a team high 7.1 rebounds per game. As a team the Knights are averaging 62.8 points per game and shoot 35.6 percent from the floor. Opponents score an average of 72.4 points per game while shooting 42.1 percent from the floor. Warner Pacific enters this weekend on a three game losing streak.

Last Time Out
The Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers used a strong first half to defeat Southern Oregon University Raiders on Friday evening at Quinn Coliseum. The Mountaineers shot 67 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 21 point halftime lead. Brittney Newcomb scored a game high 30 points on 11-of-20 from the floor. For the game the Mountaineers shot 52 percent. Kristen Schoenherr scored 15 points to lead the Raiders. EOU came away with an 102-78 victory over the Raiders. For the second straight night Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team defeated a ranked opponent. The Mountaineers were victorious over No. 14 Oregon Tech, 68-50, Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum. Brittney Newcomb led the Mountaineers with a game-high 29 points. Kassy Larson followed with 11 points for EOU. Ashleigh Vandenbrink led the Owls with 14 points. The Mountaineers shot 37.5 percent from the field while Eastern Oregon held Oregon Tech to 28 percent shooting for the game.

Conference Winning Streak
The Mountaineers are on a 24 game conference winning streak dating back to the 2011-12 season. The last conference loss for Eastern Oregon came on Feb. 10, 2012 when College of Idaho defeated EOU, 44-40. The 22 game winning streak in conference play is the longest winning streak in conference history.

Three Pointers
Eastern Oregon brings in one of the top three point shooting teams in the NAIA to these conference games this weekend. As a team the Mountaineers have made 128 three pointers on the season, which ranks sixth in the NAIA. The also rank eighth in the NAIA in made three pointers per game making 8.0 per game. Leading the Mountaineers from behind the arc is senior Brittney Newcomb. Newcomb is fourth in the nation in made three pointers per game as she averages 3.7 three pointers per game. She also ranks eighth in three pointers made (80).

Top Three
Brittney Newcomb ranks third in the NAIA in points per game. She is averaging 24.0 points per game. On the season, Newcomb has scored 20 or more points in 10 of her 12 games she has played in this season. She has scored 23 or more points in the last four contests.
