Redd leads EOU Past Corban

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team used a 32-6 run to end the first half to take control of the game and defeat the visiting Corban University Warriors, 73-61 Saturday evening at Quinn Coliseum.

Nicole Redd led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Tara Vanweerdhuizen led Corban with 14 points.

The Warriors got off to a fast start over the Mountaineers as Corban scored the first five points of the game. Corban kept the pressure on Eastern Oregon early as the Warriors pulled to an early 11 point lead, 19-8, in the first eight minutes of the contest.

Trailing by 11 the Mountaineers offense started to click into gear and EOU picked up its defense as the Mountaineers started to mount its comeback. Eastern Oregon finished the last 14 minutes of the first half on a 32-6 run.

During the stretch the Mountaineers held the Warriors scoreless for a ten minute stretch. Corban scored its next basket with two minutes to go before halftime trimming the Mountaineers lead to 11 points, 34-23. Eastern Oregon continued to add to its lead and grew the lead back to 15 points, 40-25, to go into halftime.

Eastern Oregon continued to extend its lead early in the second half as Brittney Newcomb hit a pair of free throws to put EOU ahead by 18 points, 45-27. The Mountaineers continued to dominate on the offensive end and with 13:25 left in the game, EOU found itself ahead, 55-34, after a Maloree Moss jumper.

Corban would not go away and started to chip away at the Mountaineers lead as the Warriors went on a 10-0 run capped off by a Tara Vanweerdhuizen layup. The run by the Warriors cut the Mountaineers lead down to 11 points, 55-44.

However, EOU grew its lead back to 18 points, 67-49, after a pair of free throws by Newcomb. Corban continued to battle and cut the Mountaineers lead down to 11 two more times, but not any closer. EOU defeated Corban, 73-61.

The Mountaineers return to action next Friday, Jan. 24 when they travel to Klamath Falls, Ore. to face Oregon Tech. Corban travels to Kirkland, Wash. on Jan. 24 to face Northwest. Both games tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
