LA GRANDE, Ore. – For the second straight night and third consecutive conference game the No. 16 Eastern Oregon University volleyball team swept The Evergreen State College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-19), on Saturday evening. EOU was led by junior Stefani Sorensen's game-high 15 kills.
Evergreen started out fast by scoring the first scoring the first three points of the match. EOU answered right back by scoring the next three points. With the score tied at four, EOU took its first lead of the set on a Sorensen kill. The Geoducks tied the set at five but EOU did not give up the lead the rest of the set.
After an attack error by Brittany Covert, the Mountaineers took a 17-6 lead over Evergreen. Eastern Oregon controlled the rest of the first set and took set one, 25-12.
Evergreen and EOU were locked in a tight set as and neither team held a lead of more than one the first eight points in set two. After, a Kasaundra Tuma kill the Mountaineers took a 5-4 lead. After taking the lead Eastern Oregon slowly began to build a lead and led 10-5 after a kill by Taylor Stewart.
The Geoducks did not go away as they continued to battle back and trimmed the Mountaineers lead to two points, 17-15, after an ace by Natimia Barker-Doss. Evergreen continued to keep it close for the set but EOU was too much and the Mountaineers took set two, 25-20, for a 2-0 lead over the Geoducks.
Evergreen jumped out to another, 3-0; start in set three but EOU answered with three straight points of its own to tie the set at three. With Eastern Oregon ahead, 7-6, the Geoducks scored four straight points to take a 10-7 lead over EOU.
Evergreen's lead grew to as many as five points, 14-9 but then EOU mounted a comeback. EOU fought back and tied the set at 17-17 after the Geoducks were called for a bad set. An attack error by Barker-Doss gave Eastern Oregon the lead and EOU never looked back as they took control of the third set and won set three 25-19, claiming the sweep over the Geoducks.
Stefani Sorensen recorded a game-high 15 kills. Karly Stack led the Mountaineers with 25 assists. Victoria love claimed a team-high 11 kills for Evergreen and Kelsey Delagrange recorded a game-high 27 assists.
Eastern Oregon hits the round for its two conference matches next week as they travel to Northwest Christian on Sept. 20th and Corban on Sept. 21st. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
