Hot Shooting Mountaineers Down Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team shot 60 percent from the floor in route to a 92-76 victory over The Evergreen State College Geoducks in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener on Friday evening.

Eastern Oregon (8-3, 1-0 CCC) had four players score in double figures led by Brittney Newcomb with a game-high 32 points, on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor and 5-for-8 from behind the arc. Nicole Redd followed with 19 points. Kassy Larson and Madeline Laan rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 and 10 points, respectfully.

The Mountaineers got off to a quick start in the first half against the Geoducks as they raced out to a 7-2 start after a Madeline Laan layup. The layup forced Evergreen to call its first timeout of the game. EOU continued to build to its lead, extending it to nine points, 12-3, after a Nicole Redd three pointer and Laan layup.

EOU continued to push the tempo and after a Jeni Hoffert layup, the Mountaineers grew its lead to 11 points, 18-7, the largest lead they held in the first half. With the Mountaineers ahead by 11, the Geoducks hit back-to-back three pointers trimming the lead down to three points, 20-17.

Eastern Oregon grew its lead back out to 11 points, 30-19, after a Brittney Newcomb layup. EOU continued to hold onto its 11 point lead until the end of the first half. Evergreen's Jessica Denman hit a jumper to cut the EOU lead to nine points, 36-27, which is the lead EOU took into halftime.

The Mountaineers held the Geoducks to 31 percent shooting from the floor and EOU shot 46 percent from the floor.

EOU came out and extended its lead to 12 points after a Laan layup. This put EOU ahead, 43-31 with 18:37 left in the game. However, the Geoducks scored the next four points, but EOU built the lead back up to 10 points after a Newcomb layup.

Evergreen would not go away as the Geoducks trimmed the lead down to six points, 48-42, after a Sammi Clark three pointer. The Mountaineers did not let the Geoducks get any closer and extended its lead back to 11 points, 57-46, after a Newcomb jumper.

The Geoducks continued to battle EOU and trimmed the Mountaineers lead back to six points, 63-57, after a Brittany Gray jumper. However, EOU extended its lead back to 10 points, after a Newcomb three.

With the Mountaineers ahead by 10 points, EOU and Evergreen traded buckets before EOU started to pull away. Eastern Oregon extended its lead to 15 points, 81-66, after Newcomb hit four consecutive three pointers.

Evergreen could not mount any kind of comeback this time and EOU continued to grow its lead to as many as 17 late in the second half. EOU came away with a 92-76 victory.

EOU shot 60 percent from the floor for the game, while holding Evergreen to 43 percent shooting from the floor.

EOU returns to action tomorrow night when they travel to Kirkland, Wash. to face Northwest University Eagles. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
