CCC Opening Weekend
This weekend is the opening weekend of Cascade Collegiate Conference Action. The Mountaineers open up CCC play on Friday night with the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College at 7:30 p.m. The Mountaineers conclude its opening CCC weekend by traveling to Kirkland, Wash. to take on the Northwest University Eagles, Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Scouting the Opponents
Evergreen State Geoducks
The Geoducks of The Evergreen State College come into the matchup against the Mountaineers with a 1-4 record on the season. Evergreen won its first game of the season on Oct. 25 against UBC-Okanogan, 92-87 before dropping its next four games. The Geoducks are led by Kyle Calhoun, who is averaging 21.8 points per game. As a team the Geoducks are averaging 70.0 points per game and shooting 39.7 percent from the floor. Evergreen is allowing 85.0 points per game and opponents to shoot 50.6 percent from the floor.
Northwest Eagles
The Eagles of Northwest University come into the weekend with an 8-2 record and have won its last five contests. In the first regular season Coaches' Top 25 Poll the Eagles are receiving votes. The Eagles have four players scoring in double figures this season led by Michael Greene's 17.9 points per game. Green is shooting 63.5 percent from the field on the season. Northwest is averaging 83.2 points per game, while only allowing opponents to score 68.7 points per game.
Last Time Out
The last time the Mountaineers took to the court was Nov. 22, when EOU defeated Lewis-Clark State College, 66-63. EOU used a 9-1 run over the final two minutes of the game to come away with the victory. Toney Eackles Jr. led the Mountaineers with 21 points.
Leading the NAIA
The Mountaineers are leading the NAIA in blocks per game (5.9).
Kalvin Johanson is leading the way for EOU in blocks as he is ranks second in the nation in blocks per game with 2.7 blocks per game. He is also second in total blocks with 24. Eastern Oregon is also leading the nation in total rebounds per game as they are averaging 48.9 rebounds per game.
Pestering Defense
Eastern Oregon has been playing pestering defense on its opponents all season as they are leading the Cascade Collegiate Conference in opponent's field goal percentage. The Mountaineers are holding opponents to shoot 36.1 percent from the floor on the season. This is the best in the CCC and second best in the NAIA. Embry-Riddle (Fla.) is first, as they hold its opponents to shoot 36.0 percent from the floor.
Grabbing the Boards
The Mountaineers are outrebounding its opponents by 14.8 rebounds per game. This is this best mark in the CCC and the second best mark in the NAIA.
