Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team defeated the University of Great Falls, 84-76, in EOUs second game of the Spokane Classic on Saturday evening.
The Mountaineers were led by
Brittney Newcomb, who scored 31 points, on 10-of-21 shooting for the game.
Nicole Redd followed with 14 points of her own.
EOU jumped out to a quick, 8-2, lead but a jumper by Great Fall's Lindsey Abramson cut the Mountaineers lead to two points, 8-6. Eastern Oregon continued to battle and grew its lead back out nine points, 15-6, after a pair of free throws by Redd.
Great Falls continued to battle and cut the lead to less than five points during the first half. However, each run the Argos made Eastern Oregon had an answer and with just under seven minutes before halftime EOU held a 10 point lead, 34-24.
With a one minute and 12 seconds before halftime the Argos came all the way back and tied the game at 43-43, after an Abramson layup. It looked like the game would go tied into halftime but a pair of free throws by
Taylor Riley put EOU on top by two, 45-43, at half.
Each team continued to battle in the second half as Great Falls cut the EOU lead to one point, 51-50, after an Erin Legal three pointer. The Mountaineers could not make its run and extend its lead and EOU found itself in a close contest.
Great Falls finally overcame the Mountaineers and took a one point lead with 10 minutes and 54 seconds to go in the game. The lead did not last long as EOU battled back and Great Falls and Eastern Oregon started to trade leads.
After a
Madeline Laan jumper put EOU on top, 63-62, the Mountaineers did not trail the rest of the game. Great Falls cut into the lead and had the lead down to a point, but EOU answered and extended its lead.
The Mountaineers won the game, 84-76.
EOU returns to action on Friday, Nov. 8 when they travel to Nampa, Idaho to face Northwest Nazarene University in an exhibition contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. MT.
