Warriors Storm Past Eastern Women

SALEM, Ore. – The No. 13 Corban University women's basketball team used a dominant second-half performance to defeat No. 8 Eastern Oregon University Friday, 74-55.

The Warriors (17-5, 11-2 Cascade Collegiate Conference) take sole possession of first place in the conference standings with the win. Corban has won seven straight games and 13 of its last 14 games. The Warriors also completed a regular season sweep over Eastern.

After scoring a game-high 20 points in the first meeting between the teams earlier this season, Shayla Fetters led Corban with a season-high 26 points Friday. The senior was 10-of-12 from the field, including 4-for-4 from behind the arc.

Tara Vanweerdhuizen added 13 points, on 6-of-7 shooting from the field. The freshman also had nine blocks. Katie Steigleman scored 10 points. Tess Bennett had a team-high six rebounds, and Emily Tsugawa threw seven assists.

The Warriors shot an incredible 63 percent from the field in the game, making 31 of their 49 shots. They were also 69 percent from behind the arc, hitting 9-of-13. Corban was 3-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Eastern Oregon began the game scoring the opening 10 points and built a quick 10-0 lead before Corban got on the board at the 16:53 mark thanks to a three-pointer by Tsugawa. Despite the visiting Mountaineers continuing to hold the lead thanks to a great defense and hot shooting from beyond the three-point arc, the host Warriors slowly cut into EOU's lead thanks to a 25-15 run over a span of 11-plus minutes to knot the score at 25-25 following a Fetters' three-pointer with 5:25 left.

Corban would close out the half on an 11-6 run, as the Warriors took a five-point lead (36-31) into the locker room with Steigleman scoring the final points of the opening twenty minutes via a fast-break lay-in.

The second half would begin with Corban using a 27-9 run in the opening 10-plus minutes en route to building a game-high 23-point lead (63-40) on a three-pointer by senior Becky Buhler at the 9:49 mark. The host Warriors would post two more occasions where the lead was as much as 23 points with the final coming at the 4:58 mark on another three-pointer by Fetters.

Eastern Oregon would attempt to cut into Corban's double-digit lead, but could not get any closer than 17 points (72-55) before the host Warriors settled for the 19-point victory (74-55) thanks to a lay-in by junior Christy Mosier in the final seconds.

Eastern finished 28 percent from the field. The Mountaineers were held to 6-of-19 shooting from three-point range. EOU was 11-for-14 from the free-throw line. Kyle Miller had a team-high 12 points, making four of her 13 shots from the field. Brooke Randall and Kelsea Hurliman added 11 and 10 points respectively.

EOU (19-5, 11-3) outrebounded Corban, 39-29. The Warriors had a 22-10 assist advantage, but it was Eastern that finished with 15 turnovers to Corban's 22. The Warriors blocked 14 Eastern Oregon shot attempts.

The Mountaineers travel to Eugene, Ore., to face Northwest Christian University (9-16, 1-12) Saturday at 5:30 p.m. EOU defeated the Beacons earlier this season in La Grande, 71-60. Live video and stats will be on EOUSports.com, and live radio will be on KUBQ 98.7 FM.
