LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 22 Corban University women's basketball team upset No. 9 Eastern Oregon University Saturday, 73-59.
The Warriors (11-5, 5-2 Cascade Collegiate Conference) knocked off EOU for the third straight time after dropping the previous seven meetings. Corban held the Mountaineers to a season-low 8.3 percent from behind the arc, a program-low in the past five years.
Eastern Oregon entered the game first in the conference averaging 6.73 made three-pointers per game, but finished 2-of-24 from three-point range Saturday. The Mountaineers were third in the CCC in three-point field goal percentage at 30 percent. Against Corban, EOU was 32 percent from the field and another season-low, 9-for-21 from the free-throw line.
Corban's Shayla Fetters' entered the game averaging eight points a contest, but finished with a game-high 20 points. The senior was 7-of-12 from the field, including 3-for-4 from behind the perimeter. She also had a game-high six assists.
Emily Tsugawa added 17 points and five assists for the Warriors. Tess Bennett had 14 points and 15 rebounds. Tara Vanweerdhuizen chipped in 14 points and four blocks.
Eastern Oregon jumped out to a 7-2 advantage, but the Warriors responded with a 13-2 run. Corban had its largest lead of the first half, 18-11, after a free-throw from Tsugawa with 10:40 remaining in the first half. EOU answered with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 20. The game would be tied three times and have three lead changes before the end of the half, but the Warriors took a 32-28 lead into halftime.
Corban opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 10-point advantage. The Warriors had their largest lead of the game at the 9:31 mark of the second half, 55-39. Eastern went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes. The Mountaineers came no closer and Corban would pull away.
Tina Miller led EOU (13-4, 6-2) with a season-high 13 points. The sophomore was 6-of-14 from the field. She threw a team-high three assists.
Kyle Miller finished with 11 points and
Brooke Randall had 10 points.
Jorie Freeman recorded a season-high 12 rebounds.
The Warriors shot 47 percent from the field, 6-for-13 from three-point range, and 11-of-18 from the free-throw line. Corban had 17 assists, compared to the Mountaineers' 10. Eastern outrebounded the Warriors, 48-44, and forced 17 Corban turnovers. EOU committed 11 turnovers.
The Warriors entered the game as the top team in NAIA Div. 2 in blocks per game averaging seven a contest. Saturday, Corban had seven blocks, but Eastern finished with eight.
Corban welcomes Warner Pacific College (11-7, 5-2) Friday for its next game. Eastern Oregon hosts Walla Walla University Tuesday in a non-conference contest. Both games tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
