LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 23 Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team completed a home weekend sweep with a 79-64 win over Corban University Saturday.
The Mountaineers (12-5, 5-3 Cascade Collegiate Conference) were led by
Jamar Johnson's 25-point performance. The senior has averaged 21.75 points in the past four games, scoring 25 or more in three of those games. Saturday, he made 11 of his 14 attempts from the field. Johnson grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Eastern shot a season-high 56 percent from the field, making 33-of-58 attempts. EOU also committed seven turnovers in the victory, a program-low in the past five years. The Mountaineers made all of their seven free-throw attempts. Eastern Oregon has made 84 percent of its free-throws in the past five games.
Anthony Brown added 14 points for the Mountaineers.
Cody Thurmond scored 13 points and threw nine assists.
Travares Peterson finished with 10 points.
Corban had the first lead of the game, and led 6-5, two minutes into the game. But, after a
Jeff Ranstrom basket put EOU up 7-6, the Mountaineers would not surrender the lead again in the game. Eastern led by as many as nine points in the first half, 35-26, with 2:12 left in the period. EOU had a 37-32 halftime advantage.
A three-pointer from Thurmond six minutes into the second half gave Eastern a 13-point lead, 54-41. The Mountaineers had their largest lead of 17 twice in the second half.
Jacob Kopra recorded a career-high 24 points to lead Corban. He was 8-of-11 from the field. Erik Cronrath added 14 points and three assists. Jordan Carter had a team-high seven rebounds. The Warriors (12-5, 5-3) were 40 percent from the field, 7-for-26 from three-point range, and 13-of-18 from the free-throw line. Corban outrebounded EOU, 32-29.
Eastern welcomes The College of Idaho (6-13, 1-7) for its next game Friday. Corban hosts No. 17 Warner Pacific College (14-4, 6-1) Friday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
The Mountaineers and C of I game Friday will be White Out Night in Quinn Coliseum. Fans are encouraged to wear white to support EOU in the Battle for the I-84 Cup. The first 200 fans at the game will receive a free “Wear White Get Loud” shirt.
