KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The No. 10 Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team used a last second shot from
Dominique Johnson to beat Oregon Tech, 42-40, Sunday.
Tied at 40, Johnson, nicknamed “Domo”, drove down the lane and hit a runner with 0.7 seconds remaining in regulation for the go-ahead score. The Mountaineers (17-4, 9-2 Cascade Collegiate Conference) are in first place in the CCC with the win.
Eastern picked up the victory, despite shooting 32 percent from the field, and scoring its lowest total since a 78-35 loss in 2001. It is also the lowest point total for EOU in a win since 1980.
After shooting 5-of-30 from the field in the second half in a 52-50 loss to OIT on Dec. 17, in La Grande, the Mountaineers made 4-of-21 in the first half Sunday. Eastern made two of their 15 shots from three-point range and 12-of-18 from the free-throw line.
Korrie Bourn led Eastern Oregon with 13 points. The junior was 6-of-14 from the field. She grabbed six rebounds and threw a game-high four assists.
Chayla Jones had a game-high seven rebounds.
Oregon Tech struck on its first possession when Karissa Dixon pulled up from long range to give the Owls a 3-0 lead. Eastern Oregon eventually tied the contest at 3-3 after Bourn netted Eastern first field goal with 14:39 to play in the first period.
With four more ties over the next 12 minutes, the last at 13-13, Eastern had a 17-16 halftime lead.
Back-to-back Morgan Hofman free throws, along with a Dixon driving layup put the Owls up four, 22-18, to begin the second stanza.
EOU's
Nicole Redd, however, hit from long range to pull the Mountaineers back to 22-21. The team's continued to go back-and-forth before an 8-3 EOU run put the visitors up 35-30 with 7:35 on the clock.
Tech answered with an 8-0 run, capped by a pair of Hofman free throws, that put the Owls in control, 38-35, with 2:04 to play. EOU, however, answered with layup and free throw to tie it at 38-38.
A pair of
Kelsea Hurliman free throws with 45 second to play put EOU up, but Tech's Dixon was fouled driving to the basket with 13 seconds and calmly sank her two attempts to tie it up at 40-40 with EOU in possession.

Dominique Johnson received the ball at the top of the key and worked her way to the basket, scoring with 0.7 seconds on the clock.
Tech set up a last desperation attempt but failed to get a shot before the buzzer sounded.
Dixon led OIT (18-5, 7-4) with 15 points. She was 5-of-10 from the field. Eastern held Tech to 29 percent shooting from the field, and 4-of-19 from behind the perimeter. The Lady Owls were 8-for-14 from the free-throw line. EOU outrebounded Tech, 38-30.
The Mountaineers, who have won four straight, return home to host Northwest University (8-9, 4-5) Friday. EOU defeated the Eagles in Kirkland, Wash., earlier this season. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Live video and stats on EOUSports.com.
