KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The No. 2 Oregon Tech men's basketball team won its 21st game of the season Sunday, 88-78, over No. 25 Eastern Oregon University.
The Owls (21-2, 10-1 Cascade Collegiate Conference) sit atop the conference standings after the victory. OIT defeated the Mountaineers for the fifth straight time, and extended its home winning streak over EOU to 32 games, dating back to 1979.
Bobby Hunter led Tech with 20 points. The freshman was 6-of-13 from the field, 2-for-6 from behind the arc, and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Kyle Gomez added 18 points, David Clarke scored 14, and Scotty Riddle had 12. Clarke and Gomez combined to make 7-of-14 from behind the arc. Riddle had a team-high six rebounds and Gomez threw seven assists.
Oregon Tech shot 48 percent from the field, including 53 percent in the second half. The Owls made 11 of their 25 three-point attempts, and 17 of their 24 free throws. EOU outrebounded Tech, 43-33, but had 15 turnovers to OIT's 10. Oregon Tech had a 21-16 assist advantage.
The game featured three ties and six lead changes, all in the first half. Eastern had the early advantage, taking its largest lead of the game at the 14:46 mark of the first half, 15-10. Tech responded with an 8-0 run, and took a six-point lead with 8:50 left in the opening half after a Clarke three-pointer. The Owls had their largest lead of the half at halftime, 44-31.
A lay-in from Gomez with 13:02 left in regulation gave OIT its largest lead of the game, 59-43. EOU chipped into the lead after a 14-5 run was capped off by a lay-in from
Anthony Brown. Tech built its lead back to 13 points, and led by 11 points with 3:23 left in the game. EOU went on a final 8-2 run to cut the advantage to 81-76, with 2:39 to play in regulation. The Mountaineers would come no closer.
Brown scored a career-high 21 points to lead all scorers. The junior was 8-of-13 from the field. He added a game-high 14 rebounds for his fourth career double-double.
Trent Roos had 18 points, making five of his seven three-point attempts.
Travares Peterson finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
JaMier Morris threw seven assists.
Eastern (13-7, 6-5) shot 43 percent from the field, making 28 of its 64 attempts. EOU hit nine of its 25 three-pointers, and 13 of its 21 free-throw attempts. The Mountaineers drop their second-straight game for only second time under Isaac Williams.
Eastern Oregon hosts No. 12 Northwest University (17-2, 7-2) Friday in Quinn Coliseum. It will be '70s Night and fans are encouraged to wear '70s attire to support EOU, who will be wearing throwback uniforms.
