Eastern Steams Geoducks for First Win

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a sweep over The Evergreen State College Friday, 3-0.

The Mountaineers (1-6, 1-0 Cascade Collegiate Conference) held Evergreen State to a combined 19 points in the match. That total is the fewest points an opponent has scored in the Kaki Morehead era at Eastern.

Three EOU players finished with a match-high six kills, including Katie Keeney which is a career high. Jessica Lea and Katie Showers also each had six kills. Lea and Emily Sampson each had 12 assists. Kaitlyn Duncan added eight digs.

Game 1 began with the teams tied at two, but Eastern would then go on an 8-0 run. EOU stretched the lead to 16-3, then 21-4, and eventually 25-5 for the win.

The second set was controlled by the Mountaineers and Eastern Oregon never trailed. EOU opened with a 4-1 lead then went on a 13-0 run, and won the game 25-4.

Eastern never trailed in Game 3, but the Geoducks played their best volleyball of the evening in the third game. After trailing 6-1, TESC (0-1, 0-1 CCC) fought back to close the gap to 10-7. But, the Mountaineers pulled away from there on a 15-3 run to win the set, 25-10.

Jasmine Horton and Stephanie Peshlakai-John each led Evergreen with four kills. Erin Mitchell had a team-high eight assists and Taylor Good finished with eight digs.

Eastern finished with 34 kills, while the Geoducks had 10. The Mountaineers' attack percentage was .462, compared to Evergreen's -.167.

The Geoducks travel to Caldwell, Idaho Saturday for a match at The College of Idaho at 7 p.m. EOU hosts Northwest University (2-4, 0-1 CCC) Saturday at 7 p.m. in La Grande. Live video and stats will be available on EOUSports.com. The College of Idaho swept Northwest Friday in Caldwell, 3-0.
