EOU Ends Classic With Losses

AZUSA, Calif. -- The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team fell in four games to The Master's College, 3-1, Saturday at the APU Cougar Classic.

The Mustangs (3-0) and EOU battled throughout the match that featured 22 ties and 14 lead changes. The Master's took game one, 25-21, and held off a late Mountaineer rally in the second game, 27-25.

Eastern then ended a nine-set losing streak by winning the game three, 25-21. The teams traded leads and went back and forth in the fourth game, but the Mustangs were able to pull out the 25-21 decision.

EOU's Stefani Sorensen finished with a match-high 16 kills and 10 digs. The freshman had a .342 hitting percentage in the match. Alisha Crane added 11 kills and four blocks. Jessica Lea had 17 assists and 11 digs, while Emily Sampson had 15 assists and 11 digs. Lea also contributed five blocks. Kaitlyn Duncan finished with a match-high 19 digs.

The Master's had a .183 to .163 attack percentage advantage over Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers finished with a season-high nine team blocks, while the Mustangs had five.

Samantha Dougherty led The Master's with 13 kills. Victoria Callihan added 12 kills and three blocks. Rachel Taylor had a double-double for the Mustangs with 10 kills and 18 digs. Alyssa Gergins had a match-high 26 assists. Jamie Long chipped in 22 assists.

In the second match, the Mountaineers played their best game of the young season stunning fifth-ranked Biola University (Calif.) in the first set, 25-17. Eastern had a .324 hitting percentage in game one, while Biola had a .059 percentage.

The second game was controlled by Biola. The Eagles had a 23-17 lead until EOU made a rally to even the score and then take a 26-25 lead. But BU would then score the next three points to win the game, 28-26.

Biola dominated game three, 25-11, and moved the match into the fourth game. The teams shared the lead in the game, but the Eagles pulled away late for the 25-21 decision. The match featured 31 ties and 17 lead changes.

Sorensen led Eastern with 16 kills. Lea had 13 kills, 20 assists and 13 digs. Emily Sampson finished with a season-high 29 assists. Kaitlyn Duncan had a season-high 31 digs. Taylor Stewart added 10 kills. The Mountaineers had a team attack percentage of .235.

The Eagles were led by Christine Douglas' 17 kills and 10 digs. Sarah McAtee chipped in 11 kills, and Chelsee Arnitz had 10 kills. Gracee Gallarda had a team-high 23 assists and Nicolette Douglas had 22 assists. Emily Weingartner had a team-high 24 digs. Biola's attack percentage was .280.

Eastern Oregon hosts it's alumni in the annual non-counting contest Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers open the Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule on Sept. 2 in La Grande against The Evergreen State College.
