GENEVA, Ohio – The Eastern Oregon University track and field team head to the NAIA Indoor National Championships with high expectations.
The Mountaineers will have 14 student-athletes at the meet that runs Thursday through Sunday in the brand new GaREAT Sports Complex. The meet was moved from Johnson City, Tenn. where it has been the past 10 years, to Geneva, which is just east of Cleveland. Eastern will be looking to improve on last year's 18th place finish on the men's side and 31st place women's finish.
Eight EOU women's athletes enter the meet in good position, including 2010 800-meter All-American,
Alma Garcilazo. The junior was fourth last year in the 800 and enters this year's race as the third seed. Joining her in the 800 is
Sarah Hanchett who is seeded at 16th.
Other high seeds for the Mountaineers include 2010 Cross Country runner-up
Karlee Coffey. The La Grande native enters her first Indoor National meet as the fourth seed in the 3,000 meters. Anne Barnett enters the meet as the seventh seed in the Shot Put and the 33rd seed in the Weight Throw.
In other events,
Ashlee Michelson is seeded 24th in the Shot Put, and the Distance Medley Relay team of
Laura Hansen,
Talissa Baldovino, Hanchett and
Christine Eckstein enter the meet seeded 21st.
Garcilazo is the only Mountaineer woman with Indoor National experience, although everyone but Barnett and Michelson have National Meet experience in either Outdoor Track and Field or Cross Country.
As with the women, the Eastern men head to Ohio with some very high seeds and hope to top the EOU best Indoor team finish, which was 13th in both 1994 with 10 points and 2005 with 11.25 points. The Mountaineers enter the national championships with top seeds, a first in school history.
Robbie Haynie enters the meet a few points ahead of everyone in a talented Heptathlon field and well ahead of everyone in the Pole Vault. Haynie will also compete in the High Jump where he is the 14th seed.
Ryan Booth enters as the number one seed in the 800 meters, but the number two seed is the defending national champion. Booth is also part of the men's Distance Medley Relay that enters the meet seeded sixth. Booth will be joined by
Hans Roelle, DJ Flores and
Kody Coxen on the DMR. Flores also heads to Ohio as the 11th seed in the 3,000 meters.
Dustin Cloud returns to the national meet in the Heptathlon after finishing ninth in the event last season. Cloud enters this year's field as the 14th seed.
The Cascade Collegiate Conference is sending 47 representatives to the meet. The CCC qualifier list includes 34 women and 13 men.
CCC institutions which will be represented at the national championships include College of Idaho, Concordia, Eastern Oregon, Evergreen, Northwest, and Warner Pacific. Concordia has 21 qualifiers (15 women, six men) while Eastern Oregon has 14 qualifiers (eight women, six men).
